About the author
Sant Tukaram - Tukaram Bolhoba Ambile (More) (1608-1650): a Warkari-tradition saint-poet who balanced worldly life and spirituality; through his abhangs he sharply criticised hypocrisy, fatalism and immoral conduct.
Summary
संत तुकाराम सांगतात की त्यांच्या जीवाला विठ्ठलाला भेटण्याची तीव्र ओढ लागली आहे. ते रात्रंदिवस त्याची वाट पाहत आहेत.
At the very start of the abhang, Sant Tukaram says that his soul has developed an intense longing to meet Vitthal. He waits for him day and night, which expresses his unparalleled devotion.
मग ते सांगतात, जसा चकोर पक्षी पौर्णिमेच्या चंद्राची आतुरतेने वाट पाहतो, तसेच माझे मन विठ्ठलाची वाट पाहते.
Next Tukaram gives a beautiful comparison - just as the chakor bird regards the full moon as its very life and waits eagerly for it, in the same way his own mind waits just as eagerly to meet Vitthal.
पुढे ते सांगतात की जशी दिवाळीत माहेरी जाण्यासाठी आतुर झालेली लेक बोलावण्याची वाट पाहते, आणि जसे भुकेलेले बाळ रडत आईची वाट पाहते, तशीच आपली अवस्था झाली आहे.
In the third comparison Tukaram says that just as a daughter eager to visit her parental home for the Diwali festival waits for the invitation to come, and just as a hungry child cries and waits for its mother, in the same way his soul waits to meet Vitthal.
शेवटी तुकाराम महाराज म्हणतात की मला अशीच भूक लागली आहे, म्हणून हे देवा, धावत येऊन मला तुझे मुख दाखव.
At the end of the abhang, Tukaram Maharaj says that he has developed such an irresistible hunger (longing) that he pleads with Vitthal to come running and show him his face. This expresses the poet's intense yearning.
