विश्वकोश Vishwakosh

शाळेच्या किंवा गावातील सार्वजनिक ग्रंथालयात जाड-मोठ्या पुस्तकांचे एक काचेचे कपाट लक्ष वेधते. त्यात मराठी विश्वकोश, व्युत्पत्तिकोश, चरित्रकोश, शब्दकोश असतात; ही ग्रंथसंपदा प्रत्येक वाचनालयाचा मानबिंदू असते.

In a school or town public library, a glass cupboard of thick reference books draws attention; it holds the Marathi Vishwakosh, etymology dictionary, biographical dictionary and lexicon, treasured as every library's pride.

मानव्यविद्या, विज्ञान आणि तंत्रज्ञान या सर्व विषयांचे अद्ययावत ज्ञान एका व्यापक योजनेखाली एकत्र देणारा हा मराठी विश्वकोश आहे. एक विषय समजायचा असेल तर त्याच्याशी संलग्न अनेक विषयांची माहितीही एकत्र मिळते.

The Vishwakosh compiles up-to-date knowledge of all subjects in the humanities, science and technology under one broad plan; since any main subject links to many related ones, it presents them together.

शिक्षणाचा प्रसार वाढला, भाषा समृद्ध होऊ लागली आणि भाषांमध्ये देवाणघेवाण होऊन अनेक नवे शब्द मराठीत आले. औद्योगिकीकरणामुळे वैज्ञानिक व तांत्रिक गरजा वाढल्या, म्हणून सर्वविषयसंग्राहक विश्वकोशाची गरज निर्माण झाली.

As education spread fast and the language grew richer, exchange between languages brought many new words into Marathi; rising industrialisation increased scientific and technical needs, creating the need for an all-subject encyclopaedia.

उच्च शिक्षणाचे माध्यम म्हणून मराठीचा स्वीकार आणि शासनव्यवहाराची भाषा म्हणून मिळालेली मान्यता यांमुळे ही गरज अधोरेखित झाली. पहिले संपादक तर्कतीर्थ लक्ष्मणशास्त्री जोशी यांचे योगदान मोलाचे आहे; ज्ञानकोशकार डॉ. श्रीधर व्यंकटेश केतकर यांचेही कृतज्ञतापूर्वक स्मरण केले जाते.

Marathi's growing acceptance as a medium of higher education and its recognition as the language of administration underlined this need; first editor Tarkateertha Lakshmanshastri Joshi gave invaluable service, and encyclopaedist Dr Shridhar Venkatesh Ketkar is gratefully remembered too.

विषयवार तज्ज्ञांच्या समित्या रचल्या गेल्या, प्रत्येक नोंदीची शीर्षके ठरवली गेली, मुख्य-मध्यम-लहान नोंदींची टाचणे तयार झाली, नोंदींच्या मर्यादा आखल्या गेल्या, याद्या तयार झाल्या आणि त्या अकारविल्ह्यानुसार लावल्या गेल्या.

It was built step by step: expert committees by subject, fixed entry titles, notes for major-medium-minor entries, set limits for entries, lists of all entry levels, and these lists arranged in alphabetical order.

१९७६ साली महाराष्ट्र राज्य साहित्य संस्कृती मंडळाने पहिला खंड प्रकाशित केला. आजवर वीस खंड प्रसिद्ध झाले आहेत. विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी कुमार विश्वकोशही तयार झाला, आणि वीस खंडांतील माहिती आता मोबाईल ॲपमध्येही समाविष्ट आहे.

In 1976 the Maharashtra State Literature and Culture Board published the first volume; twenty volumes have appeared so far. A Kumar Vishwakosh was made for students, and the content of the twenty volumes is now in a mobile app too.
