वनवासी Vanvasi

आम्हीसुद्धा डोंगररूपी राजाची मुले आहोत, कळसूबाई आईची लेकरे आहोत. आमच्या अंगावर कपडे नाहीत, डोके उघडे आहे, तरीही आम्ही या मातीची, धरतीमातेची मुले आहोत.

The children proudly introduce themselves: we are the offspring of the mountain-king and children of Mother Kalsubai. Though bare-bodied and bare-headed, we are the children of this land, of Mother Earth; nature is our family.

हातावरच भाकरी घेऊन, वर भाजीसाठी भोकराचे फळ घेऊन, खडकावर बसून आम्ही जेवतो आणि मनापासून आनंदाने ढेकर देतो. साधे अन्न असले तरी आम्ही समाधानी आहोत.

With just bhakri on the palm and bhokar fruit for a side dish, sitting on a rock, they eat and burp happily and contentedly; even in simplicity there is complete satisfaction.

टेकडीभोवती आम्ही खेळतो, वाऱ्याबरोबर पळतो, अंगावर आभाळाचे पांघरूण घेतो आणि पृथ्वीवर मोकळेपणाने लोळतो. सारा निसर्ग हेच आमचे खेळाचे अंगण आहे.

Playing around the hill, running with the wind, wrapping the sky like a blanket and rolling freely on the earth: these images draw a free, unburdened life fully one with nature.

आम्ही वाघाच्या वाटेवरच्या आहोत, वानरांच्या नळीतले आहोत; आमचे गाव ओढ्याच्या पलीकडे आहे आणि आम्ही माळावरच्या उंबराच्या झाडासारखे आहोत. जंगलातील ठिकाणांशीच आमची ओळख जोडलेली आहे.

They identify themselves with forest landmarks: the tiger's pass, the monkeys' gorge, the village beyond the stream, the umbar tree on the upland; their very being is fused with the jungle.

कधी सूर्यावर रुसून बसतो, तर चंद्राकडे पाहून हसतो; ढगांच्या गडगडाटाशी (विजेशी) बोलतो आणि घोंगडी पांघरून नाचतो. निसर्गातील प्रत्येक गोष्ट जणू आमची मैत्रीण आहे.

Sulking at the sun, smiling at the moon, conversing with the thunder/lightning, and dancing wrapped in a blanket: these suggest a friendship and emotional bond with the elements of nature.

डोक्यावर जणू आभाळ तोलून आम्ही चालतो, सिंहासारख्या रुबाबदार चालीने वावरतो, झाडांवर व कड्यांवर सहज हिंडतो आणि पक्ष्यांच्या भाषेत बोलतो. आम्ही धाडसी आणि स्वाभिमानी आहोत.

Walking as if holding up the sky means great confidence; a lion-like gait means fearlessness and self-respect; roaming over trees and cliffs and speaking the birds' language show an easy oneness with nature.

सशासारख्या वेगाने आम्ही डोंगर चढून जातो, हात लावून आकाशाला स्पर्श करतो आणि चांदण्या घेऊन परत येतो. आमची स्वप्ने व आकांक्षा खूप मोठ्या व उंच आहेत.
