मातीची सावली Matichi Savali

फरसू थकलेल्या पायांनी नव्या बंगल्याच्या पायरीवर येऊन बसतो. सून त्याला आत बोलावते. गुबगुबीत खुर्चीवर त्याला अवघडल्यासारखे वाटते; जुन्या घराच्या पायरीवर ऐसपैस बसण्याची त्याची सवय होती.

Tired Farsu sits on the step of the new bungalow; his daughter-in-law calls him in. The soft chair feels awkward to him, for he was used to sitting freely on the step of the old house.

जुन्या घराच्या दारातली पुराणी चिंच, तिची आईच्या पदरासारखी सावली, घरभर भरून राहणारा गारवा फरसूला आठवतो. पायरीवर बसून फुलपाखरी पाने, खारी पाहणे हा त्याचा छंद होता; रात्री आबूशी गप्पा रंगायच्या.

Farsu recalls the old tamarind tree at the door, its shade like a mother's pallu, and the coolness in the house. Watching fluttering leaves and squirrels was his hobby, and at night he chatted with Abu.

फरसू चिंचेचा पाला खत म्हणून वाडीत टाकायचा, त्यामुळे जमीन काळी कसदार झाली होती. त्याची भातशेती, विहीर पाणीदार होती. दुष्काळातही त्याच्या विहिरीला पाणी असे. दीड एकरात त्याने चार मुले वाढवली व तीन मुलींची लग्ने केली.

Farsu used tamarind leaves as manure, making his land rich and black; his rice fields and well stayed full even in drought. On just one and a half acres he raised four children and married off three daughters.

धाकटा मुलगा मनू इंग्रजी कंपनीत कामाला; मातीत हात घालणे त्याला नकोसे. नव्या घरातले मुके जेवण फरसूच्या घशातून उतरत नाही. जुन्या घरातील प्रार्थना, बायको कोसूची माया, घासागणिक उतरणारी ममता त्याला आठवते.

The younger son Manu works in an English company and dislikes touching the soil. The silent meals choke Farsu, who remembers the old home's prayer, his wife Kosu's love, and warmth in every morsel.

कोसू एका जखमेने आठवड्यातच गेली. मनूने जमीन विकायला काढली, फरसूने नाइलाजाने सही केली. फरसू दुःखाने बोलतो, तेव्हा मनू अभिमानाने म्हणतो, जमीन विकली म्हणूनच बंगला बांधता आला; नाहीतर आयुष्य गोठ्यातच गेले असते.

Kosu died within a week of a wound. Manu put the land up for sale and Farsu reluctantly signed. When Farsu grieves, Manu proudly says it is only by selling the land that the bungalow was built.

ट्रॅक्टर फिरला, बाग मातीला मिळाली; मनूने जुनी झाडे आणि चिंचेचे झाड कापून तिथे इंग्लिश गुलाबांची बाग केली. मनू झाडांना कचरा म्हणतो; फरसू म्हणतो, झाडे कधी जंगली नसतात, कुऱ्हाड घेऊन झाडे कापणारी आपणच जंगली माणसे.

A tractor levelled the garden; Manu cut the old trees and the tamarind to plant a bed of English roses, calling the trees rubbish. Farsu replies that trees are never wild, it is we humans with axes who are wild.

रात्री आबूशी बोलताना फरसू म्हणतो, बायको गेली, जमीन गेली, झाड गेले, मुलगाही आपला राहिला नाही. शेवटी दीड एकरातून वर येणाऱ्या त्या भल्यामोठ्या इमारतीची काळी सावली शेतावर पसरलेली पाहून फरसूला वाटते, ही आपल्या मातीची सावली आहे.

Talking to Abu at night, Farsu says his wife, land, tree and even his son are lost to him. Finally, seeing the huge building's black shadow spread over his levelled field, he feels this is the shadow of his soil.
