कीर्ती कठीयाचा दृष्टान्त Kirti Kathiyacha Drishtant

डोमग्रामी गोसावींच्या (चक्रधर स्वामींच्या) ठिकाणी मातीचे काम चालू होते आणि भक्तजन ते काम करत होते. भट मात्र काम करू लागले.

At the Domgram place of the Gosavi (Chakradhar Swami) clay-work was going on, and the devotees were doing it; Bhat too began to take part in the work.

नाथोबांनी विचारले, 'नागदेया, तू असा काहीच कसा करत नाहीस?' भट म्हणाले, 'आम्ही वैरागी आहोत, मग कशाला काम करू?'

Nathoba asked, 'Nagdeya, why do you not do any of this?' Bhat replied, 'We are renouncers, why should we toil?'

तेव्हा सर्वज्ञ (चक्रधर) म्हणाले, 'वानरेया, तुला जीवाला वैराग्य मिरवायला आवडते; हाही एक विकारच आहे.'

Then the Omniscient One (Chakradhar) said, 'Vanareya, the soul likes to show off its renunciation; even this is just an impulse.'

भट म्हणाले, 'मग निर्विकार म्हणजे विकाररहित कोण?' सर्वज्ञ म्हणाले, 'जीव विकारावेगळा कधीच झालेला नाही, मग तू तरी वेगळा कसा असशील?'

Bhat asked, 'Then who is free of all impulse?' The Omniscient One said, 'The soul has never been apart from impulse, so how could you be apart?'

हे पटवून देण्यासाठी गोसावींनी कीर्ती कठीयाचा दृष्टान्त सांगितला. एक कठीया (देवालयाची सेवा करणारा) होता; तो भोगस्थानाची सेवा करी, झाडलोट करी, सडासंमार्जन करी.

To explain this the Gosavi told the parable of the fame-seeking temple-keeper: there was a certain keeper who served the shrine, swept it, and washed and cleaned its floors.

गावातले लोक त्याला पाहून म्हणत, 'कठीये, तू छान काम करतोस, सुंदर करतोस.' ती स्तुती ऐकून तो दिवसेंदिवस अधिकाधिक उत्साहाने काम वाढवत गेला.

Seeing him, the villagers said, 'Keeper, you do it well, you do it beautifully.' Hearing that praise he raised his effort higher and higher day by day.

पण त्याची सेवा कीर्तीसाठी होती, म्हणून देवतेने त्याला आपले खरे फळ दिले नाही; त्याला फक्त कीर्तीचेच फळ मिळाले.

Because his service was for fame, the deity did not give him its own true reward; he received only the reward of fame.
