इंग्लंडचा हिवाळा Inglandcha Hivala

सप्टेंबर-ऑक्टोबरनंतर लंडनमध्ये जवळजवळ रोज पाऊस पडायचा. ओळखीचे लंडनवासी पावसाला शिव्या देत, पण लेखिकेला मात्र त्या पावसाची मोठी मौज वाटे. वाटेत चिखल नसे, मजेदार गारवा होता आणि चार-पाच मैल चालूनही थकवा येत नसे.

After September-October it rained in London almost every day. Londoners cursed the rain, but the writer delighted in it because there was no mud on the road, a pleasant coolness, and no tiredness even after walking four or five miles.

The writer says Indian fog gives a pleasant feeling: a sky washed clean by rain, air so clear one can see ten miles, and a curtain of fog that teases the eye for only a short while.

At Mahabaleshwar or Sinhagad the valley below fills with fog at dawn; when the sun rises rainbows shimmer on the fog, the fog vanishes, and countless dewdrops on the blades of grass reflect a million suns.

पण लंडनचे धुके वेगळेच असते. तिकडचे आकाश आपल्या आकाशाइतके उंच कधी वाटतच नाही; वर पाहिले की सर्व शहरावर काळसर पांढुरके छत घातल्यासारखे दिसते. कोळशावर चालणारे हजारो कारखाने आणि घरांतल्या लाखो चुली रात्रंदिवस धूर सोडत असतात.

But London's fog is something else: the sky there never seems as high as ours, and it looks as if a dark whitish roof is laid over the whole city. Thousands of coal-burning factories and lakhs of household hearths spew smoke into the air day and night.

Even walking barefoot indoors blackens the feet, and touching any tree blackens the hands. When fog spreads in this smoky air, the usually invisible coal particles seem to become visible; the darkness can be seen and almost held in the hand.

असे धुके वर्षातून एक-दोनदा लंडनवर पसरते आणि त्यामुळे हाहाकार होतो. ब्रिटिश खाडीत बोटीवर बोटी आपटतात, रस्त्यावर गाड्यांचे अपघात होतात आणि मुले रस्ता चुकतात. पृथ्वीभोवती हवेचे आवरण आहे याचा प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव लेखिकेला या धुक्यात आला.

Such fog spreads over London once or twice a year and causes havoc: ships collide in the British channel, vehicles crash on the roads, and children lose their way. The writer experienced first-hand here the layer of air around the earth she had only read about in geography.

In winter the day here stays only as bright as twilight for many weeks; just as light is absent, so is shadow. In St James's Park the light, reflected off the thin ice on the lake, seemed to spread upward from below; all the colours here look soft, gentle, and complementary to one another.
