आपण रोज कार्टून्स पाहतो. वेडीवाकडी रेषा किंवा एखादा जोक म्हणजे कार्टून, असं अनेकांना वाटतं. पण हास्यचित्र म्हणजे सफाईदार रेषांनी काढलेलं गमतीदार चित्र, जे पाहून आपल्याला हसू येतं.

We watch cartoons daily. Many think a cartoon is just a crooked drawing or a joke, but a humorous drawing is a funny picture made with clean lines that makes us laugh.

व्यंगचित्र हा हास्यचित्राचा पुढचा टप्पा आहे. ते आपल्याला हसवतं, पण फक्त हसवणं एवढाच त्याचा हेतू नसतो. थोडं थांबून पाहिलं, तर त्यात एक गमतीदार विचार मांडलेला असतो.

A cartoon is the next step beyond a humorous drawing. It makes us laugh, but laughter is not its only aim; if we pause, we find a witty thought placed inside it.

हास्यचित्रात लहान मुलं काढणं सर्वांत अवघड गोष्ट आहे. नुसतं चित्र लहान काढलं, दाढीमिश्या काढल्या नाहीत, किंवा शर्ट-चड्डी घातली, तरी ते मूल मुलासारखं वाटेलच असं नाही. इथेच व्यंगचित्रकाराचं कौशल्य दिसतं.

Drawing children in a humorous picture is the hardest task. Just making the figure small, leaving out a beard, or putting on a shirt and shorts does not make it look like a child; this is where the cartoonist's skill shows.

लेखक अनेक चित्रकारांची चित्रं दाखवतात: शि. द. फडणीस यांची रोपट्याला दुधाच्या बाटलीने पाणी घालणारी मुलगी, श्याम जोशी यांचं रांगणारं मूल व देवाला फूल देणारा मुलगा, आणि डेव्हीड लँग्डन यांचा गल्ला फोडणारा व सेफ्टी पिन टोचून रडणारा मुलगा.

The writer shows works by several artists: Shi. D. Phadnis's girl watering a sapling with a milk-bottle, Shyam Joshi's crawling baby and the boy offering a flower to God, and David Langdon's boy breaking a piggy-bank and the boy crying because of a safety pin.

ज्या चित्रात मोठा माणूस आणि लहान मूल दोघेही असतात, तिथे फरक नीट दिसतो. आर. के. लक्ष्मण यांच्या चित्रात केस कापणारा माणूस आणि कंटाळलेला मुलगा आहे. चिंटूच्या चित्रमालिकेतही तिसऱ्या चित्रात अर्थ उलगडतो.

Where one picture has both an adult and a child, the difference is clear. R. K. Laxman's drawing shows a barber and a bored boy. In the Chintoo strip too, the meaning unfolds in the third frame.

हंगेरियन चित्रकार रेबर यांच्या चित्रात लहानपणी मोठं व्हायोलिन आणि मोठेपणी लहान व्हायोलिन वाजवणारा माणूस दिसतो: लहानांना मोठ्या वस्तूंचं आकर्षण असतं. नॉर्मन थेलवेल यांच्या चित्रात बुटात काहीतरी घुसलेला, वेडावाकडा झालेला स्काउटचा मुलगा आहे.

Hungarian artist Reber's cartoon shows a man playing a big violin as a child and a small one as an adult: children are drawn to big things. Norman Thelwell's drawing shows a scout boy twisted up while trying to pull something out of his boot.

शेवटी लक्षात येतं, की लहान मूल काढताना फक्त आकार लहान असून चालत नाही; शरीराच्या प्रत्येक अवयवाचा आकार त्या प्रमाणात लहान असावा लागतो. बोटं लहान काढली की नखं लहान होतात, भुवया एका रेषेच्या असतात. अशा बारीकसारीक गोष्टी आपणही टिपू शकतो.

In the end we realise that, when drawing a child, mere small size is not enough; every body part must be small in proportion. Small fingers make small nails, eyebrows become a single line. We too can begin to notice such fine details.
