हसरे दु:ख Hasare Dukha

रंगमंचावर लिली हार्ले सुंदर गात उभी असते. सारे प्रेक्षक भान विसरून तिचे गाणे ऐकत असतात. तिचा पाच वर्षांचा मुलगा चार्ली विंगमध्ये उभा राहून प्रेमाने आईकडे बघत असतो.

Under the bright stage lights Lily Harley sings with full absorption. Her voice merges with the orchestra and the whole audience listens spellbound, while her little son Charlie stands still in the wing watching her lovingly.

गाणे ऐन रंगात असतानाच लिलीचा आवाज एकदम चिरकतो. खूप प्रयत्न करूनही कंठातून सूर बाहेर येत नाहीत. हे असे का झाले हे तिचे तिलाही कळत नाही.

At the very height of the song her voice suddenly cracks; however hard she tries, not even a dull note will come out. The pitiful sight is like a wounded skylark struggling to take flight.

काही वेळ प्रेक्षक थांबतात, पण मग आरडाओरडा सुरू होतो. काही जण भसाड्या आवाजात तिचेच गाणे म्हणू लागतात, शिट्ट्या वाजवतात. लिलीचा चेहरा पांढरा पडतो आणि ती अपमानित होऊन विंगमध्ये परत येते.

The audience cannot hold back; they shout, sing her own song in harsh voices and add whistles and jeers. Lily, whose reliable voice had never failed her before, is humiliated for the first time and quietly returns to the wing.

स्टेज मॅनेजर म्हणतो की कार्यक्रम पुढे चालूच राहिला पाहिजे. चार्लीला तेच गाणे येते हे त्याला माहीत असते, म्हणून तो चार्लीला घेऊन स्टेजवर जातो आणि प्रेक्षकांना त्याची ओळख करून देतो.

The stage manager decides the show must go on or the reputation will suffer. He has heard Charlie sing the same song; with Lily's silent consent he pats the boy, introduces him as Lily Harley's son and asks him to sing Jack Jones.

चार्ली निर्भयपणे गाऊ लागतो. प्रेक्षक खूश होऊन स्टेजवर पैसे फेकतात. चार्ली गाणे थांबवून 'आधी पैसे गोळा करतो, मग गाणे म्हणतो' असे म्हणतो; त्याच्या या धिटाईने सर्वजण हसतात.

Charlie sings naturally and the whole theatre fills with his voice; the moved audience showers coins on the stage. His bold remark that he will first collect the money and then finish the song sets off waves of laughter.

मॅनेजर रुमालात पैसे गोळा करतो तेव्हा तो स्वत:साठी घेतो असे वाटून चार्ली त्याचा पाठलाग करतो. प्रेक्षक खूप हसतात. नंतर मॅनेजर ते पैसे आईला देतो तेव्हा चार्लीच्या जिवात जीव येतो.

When the manager gathers the coins in a handkerchief and heads for the wing, Charlie, thinking he is taking them for himself, chases after him, raising a storm of laughter. Only when the manager hands all the money to Charlie's mother does the boy feel relieved.

चार्ली नकला करून, आईच्या आवाजात गाणे म्हणून सर्वांना खूश करतो. आईचा चिरकलेला आवाजही हुबेहूब काढतो. विंगमधून हे पाहणाऱ्या लिलीला आपल्या पोराचे अपार कौतुक वाटते. त्या रात्री चार्लीचे रंगमंचावर कायमचे पदार्पण होते आणि आईचा पाय रंगमंचावरून कायमचा निघतो.

Charlie even mimics his mother's Irish march-song and her cracking voice exactly; the audience is stunned and money rains again. Lily grasps the timeless truth that audiences honour the art, not the artist. That night Charlie's stage debut becomes permanent and his mother leaves the stage forever, remaining behind only as the ordinary woman Hannah Chaplin.
