एक होती समई Ek Hoti Samai

काही माणसं संकटाची वादळं सहन करून मोठी होतात आणि सागरासारखी विशाल बनतात. अनुताई वाघ अशाच पहिल्या प्रकारच्या माणसांपैकी होत्या.

Some people endure life's storms and grow vast like the sea. The author places the great social worker and educationist Anutai Wagh among such people.

अनुताईंचा विवाह केवळ तेराव्या वर्षी झाला आणि सहा महिन्यांतच त्या विधवा झाल्या. एवढं मोठं दुःख त्यांनी जिद्दीनं पचवलं आणि उभ्या राहिल्या.

Anutai married at just thirteen and was widowed within six months. She bore this huge sorrow with grit and, supported by Tarabai Modak, rose again with determination.

त्यांनी स्वतः बाहेरून अभ्यास करून पदवी मिळवली आणि आदिवासींच्या घराघरात ज्ञान पोहोचवण्याचे व्रत घेतले.

She studied privately and earned a degree, then took up the vow of carrying knowledge to every tribal home, beginning as a worker in a pre-primary school.

ताराबाई मोडक यांच्या निधनानंतर अनुताई संस्थेच्या संचालक झाल्या. ताराबाईंनी लावलेल्या लहान रोपट्याचे त्यांनी मोठ्या वटवृक्षात रूपांतर केले.

After Tarabai Modak's death, Anutai became director of the institution and, through fresh ideas and constant experiments, grew Tarabai's sapling into a great banyan tree.

'घरोघरी दिवा लावा' असा नुसता प्रचार न करता त्या स्वतःच दिवा बनल्या. त्यात त्यांनी आपल्या श्रमाचे तेल ओतले आणि आयुष्यभर तो प्रकाश तेवत ठेवला.

Instead of merely preaching that others light a lamp of knowledge, she became the lamp herself, pouring in the oil of her labour and keeping it burning all her life.

शिक्षणाबरोबरच त्यांनी बालकल्याण, मूक-बधिरांचे शिक्षण, महिला विकास, अंधश्रद्धा निर्मूलन, स्वच्छता, आरोग्य अशा अनेक क्षेत्रांत कष्ट घेतले.

Beyond education she worked hard for child welfare, education of the deaf and mute, women's development, eradication of superstition, cleanliness and health, running many experiments at once to shape good citizens.

पाच-सहा तपांच्या अखंड धडपडीनंतर कोसबाडच्या टेकडीवरील ही समई आता विझली आहे. तिच्या पाऊलखुणा जपणे हीच तिला खरी आदरांजली ठरेल.

After five or six decades of ceaseless effort, this lamp on the Kosbad hill has now gone out; the author says preserving Anutai's footprints would be the truest tribute to her.
