दुपार Dupar

सकाळचा उत्साह संपल्यावर सूर्य आकाशाच्या मध्यावर येतो आणि जगाची दुपार सुरू होते. सूर्याच्या तेजाने सगळा आसमंत तेजाळून जातो; त्याच्याकडे डोळे वर करून पाहण्याचीही हिंमत होत नाही.

After the freshness of morning, the sun reaches its zenith and the world's noon begins. Its fierce light blazes across the whole horizon, so dazzling that one cannot even dare to look up at it.

एखाद्या शेतावर सकाळपासून नांगरून घाम गाळलेला शेतकरी वडा-पिंपळाच्या सावलीत विसावतो. घरची लक्ष्मी भाकर-तुकडा आणते, दोघे सुख-दु:खाच्या गोष्टी करतात आणि दुपार आदराने त्या दोघांकडे पाहत असते.

On a farm, a farmer worn out from ploughing since morning rests in the shade of a banyan or peepal tree. His wife brings food, they share their joys and sorrows, and the contented noon watches the pair with great respect.

पक्ष्यांचा किलबिलाट थांबतो, ते सावलीत डुलकी काढतात; कबुतरे छपराच्या सांदीत सैलावतात. जंगलातले प्राणीही भटकंती थांबवून ढोलीत किंवा गुहेत पाय ताणून विसावतात. 'थोडी विश्रांती घ्या' असे दुपार त्यांना सांगते.

The birds stop their chatter and nap in the shade; pigeons relax in the nooks of roofs. Even forest animals halt their wandering and stretch out to rest in hollows or caves. Noon tells them all to take a little rest so they can work with fresh energy.

शहरात गाडीवान आणि सायकलरिक्षावाले उन्हातही पोटासाठी कष्ट करतात; दुपार त्यांना सलाम करते. कारखान्यात पहिली पाळी संपते, दुसरे कामगार येतात आणि न थांबणाऱ्या मशीनकडे पाहत दुपार त्यांना काम करत राहण्याचा आशीर्वाद देते.

In the city, cart-pullers and cycle-rickshaw men toil even in the blazing heat to earn their bread, and noon salutes these labourers. In factories one shift ends and the next begins; watching the machine that never stops, noon blesses the workers to keep on working.

मधल्या सुट्टीत मुले आनंदाने डबा खाऊन खेळतात आणि दुपार त्यांच्या आनंदात सामील होते. कार्यालयांतले लेखनिक घड्याळाकडे पाहत जेवणाच्या सुट्टीची वाट पाहतात; सहकाऱ्यांशी गप्पा मारून, एकमेकांच्या डब्यातले पदार्थ चाखून ताजेतवाने होतात.

At school, children quickly eat their favourite tiffin during recess and play, and noon shares in their joy each day. In offices, clerks and accountants keep glancing at the clock, awaiting the lunch break; they chat with colleagues, taste each other's food, and return to work refreshed.

समुद्रावरही दुपार होते; तापलेले खारे पाणी वाफ होऊन आकाशाकडे झेपावते. माणसे आयुष्याच्या दुपारीच, म्हणजे कर्तृत्वाच्या काळातच पुढच्या आयुष्याची बेगमी करतात. घरातली वृद्ध माणसे वामकुक्षी करता-करता मागे बघून आपल्या आयुष्याचे सिंहावलोकन करतात.

Noon falls upon the boundless sea too; the heated salt water rises as vapour towards the sky. People, in the very noon of their lives, that is in their working years, provide for the years ahead. The old, lying down for a midday rest, look back and review their lives, then calm their minds.

हिमालय व आल्प्सवरचे बर्फ दुपारच्या उष्णतेने वितळते, थेंबाथेंबाने ओहोळ, नदी होऊन शेतकऱ्याला सुख देते. शेवटी लेखक दुपारला कर्तृत्ववान, हितकर्ती, रक्षणकर्ती मानून 'तुला शतश: प्रणाम' म्हणतो.

The snow on the Himalayas and the Alps melts in noon's heat, becoming streams and rivers that flow brimful and bring joy to the farmer. Finally, calling noon creative, benevolent and protective, the writer offers it a hundredfold salute.
