‘बिग ५’च्या सहवासात 'Big 5'chya Sahavasat

जंगलात फिरून दुर्मीळ प्राणी शोधण्यात एक वेगळेच ‘थ्रिल’ असते. या वेळेस लेखकाने केनया व झिंबाब्वे इथल्या पार्क्समध्ये ‘बिग ५’ प्राणी जवळून पाहण्यासाठी जवळजवळ बारा-तेरा दिवसांची सहल आयोजित केली.

There is a special thrill in roaming the jungle and tracking rare animals. Having tasted it earlier at Kruger National Park, the writer arranges a roughly twelve-to-thirteen-day trip across the parks of Kenya and Zimbabwe to see the 'Big 5' from close quarters.

नैरोबीला उतरल्यावर ‘आफ्रिकन क्वेस्टर’ कंपनीच्या माणसाने ‘जँबो’ (हॅलो) म्हणत स्वागत केले. रोज सकाळ-संध्याकाळ चार-पाच तासांचा गेम ड्राइव्ह असे. उघड्या छपराच्या मॅटेडोर गाड्यांतून, वायरलेस सेटच्या मदतीने प्राणी जवळून पाहता व फोटो काढता येत.

At Nairobi airport the company's man welcomed them with 'Jambo' (hello). Each day brought morning and evening game drives of four-five hours through parks like Mount Kenya, Samburu, Aberdares, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara, in sturdy open-roofed Matador vehicles fitted with wireless sets so the cars could stay in touch.

वासोनैरो नदीत शेकडो अजस्र मगरी होत्या. ॲबरडट्स पार्कमधील आर्क लॉजमध्ये बेल वाजली की कोणता प्राणी आला हे कळे. नकुरू तलावावर गुलाबी रंगाचे दीड-दोन लाख फ्लेमिंगो होते; तो पार्क दुर्मीळ पक्ष्यांचा मोठा खजिनाच आहे.

The Wasonairo river held hundreds of huge crocodiles. At the Ark Lodge in Aberdares, a bell signalled which animal had come (one ring elephant, two rhino, three leopard). The saltwater Nakuru lake, with one-and-a-half to two lakh pink flamingos and 450 bird species, is a treasure for bird lovers.

गाइड फरीदने नकुरू पार्कमध्ये काळे गेंडे व त्यांच्यामागे दुर्मीळ पांढरा गेंडा दाखवला. ‘बिग ५’ म्हणजे सिंह, लेपर्ड-चित्ता, गेंडा, हत्ती व जंगली म्हैस. आकाराने मोठे म्हणून नव्हे, तर जमिनीवरून शिकार करणे अत्यंत कठीण म्हणून त्यांना ‘बिग ५’ म्हणतात.

Guide Farid suddenly steered into the bushes and showed three-four black rhinos and behind them the very rare white rhino grazing. The term 'Big 5' (lion, leopard-cheetah, rhino, elephant, wild buffalo) arose not because they are large, but because hunting them on foot is extremely difficult.

मसाईमाराकडे जाताना सुक्या गवतात सिंहांचे सारे कुटुंबच दिसले: दोन-तीन सिंहिणी व त्यांची दहा बाळे, शेजारी मारलेली म्हैस. सिंह गाडीला अगदी खेटून पहुडले. फरीदने हालचाल न करण्याच्या खुणा केल्या. अर्धा-पाऊण तास हे थरारक दृश्य चालले, जणू डिस्कव्हरी चॅनेल.

On the way to Mara Serena Lodge a whole lion family appeared in the dry grass: lionesses and ten cubs, with a killed buffalo nearby. The lions lay right against the car in its shadow; Farid switched off the engine and signalled stillness. The thrilling scene lasted nearly forty-five minutes, like the Discovery Channel.

पुढे सिंहाची वैशिष्ट्ये कळली: तो दिवसाचे जवळजवळ वीस तास आळसटून पडतो, शिकार बहुधा सिंहिणीच करतात. नंतर झाडाच्या फांदीवर लेपर्ड आणि एका संध्याकाळी चित्तीण व तिची तीन बाळे दिसली. चित्ता हा जगातील सर्वांत चपळ प्राणी, ताशी १०० कि.मी. वेगाने पळतो.

The writer learns that lions laze for nearly twenty hours a day and lionesses do most of the hunting, with man their only enemy. Later a leopard rests on a branch, and one evening a cheetah and her three cubs appear. The cheetah, the world's swiftest animal, runs at 100 km/h (only for the first 500 metres) and kills by stalking and suffocating its prey.

केनयाची अर्थव्यवस्था मुख्यतः पर्यटन, कॉफी, चहा व फुले (गुलाब) या चार उत्पन्नांवर अवलंबून आहे; त्यात पर्यटन पहिल्या क्रमांकावर आहे. प्राण्यांजवळ बोलू नये, टाळ्या वाजवू नयेत, खायला घालू नये असे कडक नियम सरकारने केले आहेत.

Kenya's economy rests mainly on four sources, tourism, coffee, tea and flowers (roses), with tourism ranking first. The government enforces strict rules for tourists, do not leave the main road, do not talk or clap near animals, do not feed them, and rangers may fine and expel violators.
