संतवाणी Santvani (Voice of the Saints - Two Abhangs)

संत जनाबाई सांगतात की एक पक्षी दूरवर जाऊन आपल्या पिलांसाठी चारा घेऊन येतो. घार आकाशात उंच उडत असली, तरी तिचे लक्ष सतत खालच्या पिलांकडे असते. आई घरातल्या कामात व्यग्र असली, तरी तिचे मन मात्र सतत आपल्या बाळाजवळच असते.

In the first abhang, Sant Janabai gives three examples from nature that show the intensity of a mother's love. A mother bird flies far away to bring food for her chicks. Although a kite roams freely in the open sky, at the moment of danger she swoops down at once to protect her young. In the same way, a mother may be fully occupied with housework, yet her innermost thoughts always circle around her child.

वानरीण झाडांवर उड्या मारत हिंडत असली, तरी ती आपल्या पिलाला पोटाशी घट्ट धरून सुरक्षित ठेवते. या सर्व उदाहरणांप्रमाणेच, संत जनाबाई सांगतात की आपली विठ्ठल माऊलीसुद्धा आपल्या भक्तांची अशीच वेळोवेळी काळजी घेते व त्यांना सांभाळते.

The fourth example is of a mother monkey, who leaps from tree to tree yet keeps her baby bound securely to her body throughout. At the end of these examples, Sant Janabai concludes that just like all these mothers, our Mother Vitthal too watches over her devotees lovingly, again and again, and protects them. This expresses the idea that God is not a stern ruler but a mother overflowing with tender, motherly affection.

संत तुकाराम सांगतात की समाजात असे काही ढोंगी लोक आहेत, जे वाईट कृत्ये करूनही स्वतःला साधू म्हणवतात. ते अंगाला राख फासतात आणि डोळे मिटून ध्यान करण्याचे सोंग घेत पापकृत्ये करतात.

In the second abhang, Sant Tukaram draws attention to a serious social problem, that of fake asceticism. Certain people commit wicked deeds yet call themselves saints and holy men. To create a false appearance of holiness, they smear ash on their bodies, and pretending to be in meditation with closed eyes, secretly go on committing sins.

हे ढोंगी लोक जगाला दाखवण्यासाठी वैराग्याचा आव आणतात, पण खरे तर ते सर्व प्रकारच्या भौतिक सुखांचा उपभोग घेत असतात. शेवटी संत तुकाराम स्पष्टपणे सांगतात की अशा भोंदू लोकांची संगत माणसाने कधीही ठेवू नये, त्यांच्यापासून दूर राहावे.

These hypocrites put on a complete show of renunciation for the world to see, but in reality they thoroughly indulge in every kind of worldly pleasure. Sant Tukaram comments sharply on this double standard at the end, stating clearly that one should never keep company with such fake people; staying alert and away from them at all times is his important warning to society.
