पंडिता रमाबाई Pandita Ramabai

एका देशभक्ताने कोलकात्यात स्त्रियांसाठी खास एक कार्यक्रम आयोजित केला होता, जी भारतातील बायकांची पहिली सार्वजनिक सभा मानली जाते. रमाबाईंना बंगाली बोलता येत नव्हते, त्यामुळे त्यांनी संस्कृत भाषेत भाषण केले आणि श्रोत्यांसाठी ते बंगालीत उलगडून सांगण्यात आले. एखादी बाई सभेसमोर उभी राहून बोलते, हेच त्या काळात लोकांना विलक्षण वाटत असे.

A gathering organised in Kolkata at a patriot's initiative is regarded as the first-ever public meeting of women in India, and Ramabai, who addressed the crowd there, became its first woman speaker. Since she had no command of Bengali, she spoke in Sanskrit, which was rendered into Bengali on the spot for the audience. To the society of that era, the very sight of a woman standing on a platform and speaking her mind seemed astonishing and unfamiliar.

रमाबाईंचे स्वतःचे आयुष्य दुःखांनी भरलेले होते. लहान वयातच त्यांनी आई, वडील आणि भाऊ या तिघांनाही गमावले. पुढे लग्न झाले, पण नवऱ्याचेही अवघ्या दोन वर्षांत निधन झाले. एकुलत्या एका मुलीला सांभाळत त्यांना एकटीनेच जीवन उभे करावे लागले, तरी त्यांनी हार मानली नाही.

Ramabai's own personal life was a string of one grief following another. In her early youth she lost her parents and her brother, and soon came to know what solitude truly meant. Barely two years into her marriage, her husband too passed away, leaving her to bring up her infant daughter single-handedly - yet her spirit never wavered.

एका शिक्षण-आयोगासमोर रमाबाईंनी सांगितले की मुलींनी नुसते शिकून थांबू नये, तर पुढे जाऊन इतरांनाही शिकवावे. यासाठी शिक्षिका होऊ इच्छिणाऱ्या मुलींना आर्थिक मदत मिळावी, असा त्यांनी आग्रह धरला. त्यांची स्वतःची मुलगी परदेशातून अंधांसाठीची खास लिपी शिकून आली, आणि त्यामुळे दृष्टिहीन मुलींनाही शिकण्याचा मार्ग खुला झाला.

Having settled in Pune and thrown herself into the cause of women's education, Ramabai testified before an education inquiry commission with the far-sighted view that girls should not merely study but go on to become teachers themselves, and that financial help should be extended to them for this. Later, her own daughter returned from abroad having mastered the script used by the blind, opening the path to education for sightless girls as well.

बेघर, अनाथ आणि विधवा बायकांना स्वतःच्या पायावर उभे करण्यासाठी रमाबाईंनी एक मोठी संस्था सुरू केली. तिथे त्यांनी फक्त वाचायला-लिहायला शिकवले नाही, तर टोपल्या विणणे, कापड विणणे, छपाई, तेल गाळणे, पुस्तके बांधणे, शेती आणि कोंबड्या पाळणे असे लहान-मोठे व्यवसायही सुरू केले, ज्यामुळे या बायका स्वतः कमावू लागल्या.

In the institution Ramabai built to make destitute, orphaned and widowed women self-sufficient, mere basic instruction was not enough - one small trade after another was started there: basket-weaving, cloth-weaving, printing work, oil-pressing, book-binding, farming and poultry-keeping. Through this, the women gained a means of earning their own livelihood and living with dignity.

एक मोठे सभागृह बांधताना रमाबाईंनी फक्त बघ्याची भूमिका घेतली नाही. त्यांनी स्वतः त्याचा नकाशा काढला आणि डोक्यावरून विटा वाहून कामगारांना मदतही केली. यातून त्यांनी दाखवून दिले की कोणतेही श्रम कमी दर्जाचे नसते. स्वतःचे आयुष्य खडतर असूनही त्या कधी हरल्या नाहीत, आणि त्यांनी हजारो बायकांचे उदास आयुष्य आनंदाने भरून टाकले.

While a hall large enough to hold thousands of people was being built, Ramabai did not stop at merely supervising - she drew up the plan herself and personally carried basket-loads of bricks on her head to help with the construction. Rather than preaching in words alone, she taught the girls of her ashram the value of labour through her own actions. Though her own life was wrapped in sorrow, Ramabai never lost her footing, and she brought new light into the despairing lives of countless women.
