Summary
At the start of the lesson, the author tells us that in the evenings many citizens would come to stroll in the Charni Road garden in Mumbai. Krishnaji Arjun Kelaskar Guruji, the headmaster of Wilson High School and a scholarly writer, would also come there every evening at 5:30, sit on a bench, and read a book he had brought along. This introduces us to the Guruji's regular reading habit and the calm atmosphere of the garden.
The second part shows the Guruji's curiosity slowly growing. While reading on the bench, he noticed a student sitting a little distance away, also reading a book. The first day he did not pay much attention. The next day, when he saw the same boy reading there again, curiosity arose in his mind. On the third day too, the same boy was seen reading some book, and the boy also glanced at the Guruji, but neither of them spoke. This clearly shows the curiosity slowly building up in the Guruji's mind.
In the third part, the Guruji takes the initiative and approaches the boy himself. While the boy is reading, he senses someone standing nearby and looks up at the Guruji. The Guruji affectionately asks his name, and the boy replies, 'My name is Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.' The Guruji is pleased with the name and tells him that for three days he has been watching him read there every day; since the boy does not seem to play about like other children, he has come over to get to know him. This part reveals the Guruji's keen observation and genuine concern for students.
In the fourth part, Bhimrao shares information about himself with the Guruji. He says he studies at Elphinstone High School in Bhaykhala, and has a special fondness for reading books beyond his school textbooks, which is why he sits in the garden reading for a while after school gets over. Hearing this, the Guruji approvingly says, 'One must read good books.' He then asks about Bhimrao's family, and thinks to himself that this boy is certainly different from other children and truly needs affection and guidance.
In the fifth part, the Guruji takes on the role of a teacher. After pausing a moment, he says he would like to tell Bhimrao how to read in a systematic, disciplined way. Bhimrao eagerly says, 'Please tell me, Guruji!' and listens with keen interest. The Guruji explains how one should read and promises to give him books by some good authors. Bhimrao happily expresses his wish to read those books. The Guruji affectionately strokes his head, and Bhimrao feels very glad. This part shows the affectionate teacher-student bond beginning to form.
The sixth part shows this acquaintance turning into daily meetings and a close friendship. The author tells us that after this, Kelaskar Guruji began meeting Bhimrao every day in the Charni Road garden. The Guruji kept giving him books by good authors, which truly began Bhimrao's wide and deep reading. Through these regular meetings, an unbreakable bond formed between the Guruji and Bhimrao. This shows how the foundation of a respectful, affectionate teacher-student relationship is laid.
In the final part of the lesson, we see the great fruit of this friendship. The author tells us that Kelaskar Guruji recognised Bhimrao's sharp and keen intelligence and personally recommended him to Sayajirao Gaekwad Maharaj for college education and later for higher studies in America. This is how Bhimrao got the opportunity for college and higher education. Making the most of this opportunity, Bhimrao went on to become a great scholar of the world, the highly learned Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. This same highly learned Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar later wrote the constitution of independent India. This part shows how a teacher's recognition and guidance can shape a student's entire life.
