About the author

The poet is Vinda Karandikar (Govind Vinayak Karandikar) - a celebrated Marathi poet and Jnanpith Award winner, known also for playful, easy-flowing children's poems that capture everyday moments of nature with humour.

Summary

In this part, the poet tells us that in the middle of the afternoon, without any warning, lightning suddenly begins flashing across the sky. A fierce wind picks up right after, blowing with a frightening roar. Along with this wind, hailstones start pelting down everywhere. This part shows how dramatically and suddenly the rain arrives, and how forceful it is.

In this part, the poet tells us that the mud fort built for Diwali comes crashing down because of this sudden rain. The street dogs, startled by the noise of the rain and the crackle of lightning, start barking everywhere. Meanwhile, grandfather hurriedly mends his old umbrella, since he needs it ready at once to face the unexpected rain. This part shows how the sudden rain throws even the outdoor things and animals into confusion.

In this part, the poet shows the reactions of the grown-ups at home. Father, who is already running late for somewhere, gets even more delayed because of the rain, so he storms out of the house grumbling in frustration. At the same time, the papads mother had spread out to dry in the sun get completely soaked by this unexpected rain, ruining her effort. This part humorously shows how the arrival of rain disrupts everyday household tasks and moods.

In the final part, the poet paints the scene at school. When the rain arrives, the children burst into excited noise and commotion, all of them making a joyful racket together. Seeing this, Madam Kutty laughingly tells the children to run along, because school has been let out due to the rain. This closing scene gives the whole poem a happy, playful ending, since for the children the sudden rain turns out to be a reason for fun rather than trouble.
