Summary
The scene takes place in the village of Paarachi Wadi, where, as usual, the children have gathered under a tree in the lane, with two elders sitting nearby on the platform. Viju asks Bharat how much it would cost to set up a water-stall. Bharat suggests they first check how much money they have saved. Saru is surprised, though, since this money was originally saved to buy sports equipment, and she wonders where this entirely different idea came from. Shakeel replies that he, for one, likes the idea of a water-stall very much.
Saru further explains that sports equipment could easily have been bought with the money they already had, but setting up something as big as a water-stall would need the help of the elders. Hearing this, the elder sitting nearby smiles and says he had been listening to the children's conversation for a while, and finds their idea genuinely useful for the community, so he is ready to help as always. He asks when they should go shopping. Bharat eagerly asks exactly what all needs to be bought.
The elder starts listing the required items - two earthen pots, lids for them, a ladle for scooping water, drinking cups, and cotton cloth. When Viju wonders what the cloth is for, the elder explains that soaking the cloth and wrapping it around the pot keeps the water inside naturally cool. Then comes the question of exactly where to set it up. Shakeel volunteers that there is a large shady tree and enough space near his house, where the pots could be placed. Saru reminds him to get his parents' permission, and Shakeel laughs, saying he had already told them the idea as soon as it was decided, and they had agreed right away.
Bharat then explains where the idea came from - his mother asks him every day to keep out a little water for the birds, and from this very habit came the thought of doing something similar on a larger scale for people too, which he immediately shared at home. The elder adds that this particular summer is especially harsh, and the scorching heat leaves travellers constantly thirsty, so the water-stall will quench many people's thirst. Saru then raises another practical doubt - why can't people simply scoop water with a cup, why is a ladle necessary at all.
Bharat answers Saru's question - using a ladle means a person can take exactly the amount of water needed, and most importantly, many people's hands never touch the water directly, keeping it clean. The elder builds on this and asks who will fill the pots with water, and when - this too needs planning. Viju then takes the initiative and suggests filling the pots in the morning when the tap water comes, and washing them out thoroughly at night once they are empty, also offering a household tip for scrubbing the pots even cleaner.
Finally Saru suggests putting up a signboard with some messages near the water-stall, so that people remember to use the water properly and sparingly. Bharat likes the idea, and together they decide on a few fitting messages, conveying that water should not be wasted and that it is essential to life. Hearing all this brings the elder great satisfaction; he praises the children warmly and says that if everyone used water this carefully and frugally, the problem of water scarcity could be considerably reduced in the future.
