About the author
This poem is by the poet Ayyub Pathan Lohagaonkar. It describes a roadside water-stall (panpoi) that offers cool water to travellers in the summer heat, and the humanity behind it.
Summary
The poem opens with the harsh, blistering experience of peak summer. The poet describes how sweat-drenched skin combined with the sun's fierce rays makes the body feel almost scorched. In this unbearable heat, one cool memory calls out to him - a simple water-stall set up under a large banyan tree. Through these opening lines the poet sharply contrasts the summer's severity with the one relief from it - such a shaded, water-giving spot.
In the next stanza the poet paints another scene from the same blazing afternoon. The extreme heat whips up a wild, restless wind that sends dust and withered leaves swirling up toward the sky. A weary traveller who has trudged along the scorching road feels faint, his head spinning. It is precisely at that moment, as a mouthful of water goes down his throat, that he realises just how priceless water truly is, the poet notes. This underlines how indispensable water is to everyday survival.
In this part the poet expands on how, during the summer months, the sun's fury spares no one, leaving every throat equally parched. Out of this shared need, kind-hearted people place filled earthen pots by the roadside so that passers-by can quench their thirst. What makes this spot special is that no distinction is drawn between rich and poor - people from every walk of life drink from the same vessel with the same warmth. Through this the poet drives home a principle of equality and brotherhood.
In the closing part the poet sketches a small, vivid image of the earthen pot - draped in red cloth, its water pleasantly cold. Drinking to one's heart's content brings a distinct wave of contentment. Finally, the poet speaks gratefully of the generous person behind this effort - every traveller refreshed by the water walks on silently wishing that unnamed benefactor well, he tells us. These closing lines beautifully capture selfless generosity and the gratitude it inspires in return.
