About the author
The author is unnamed; this Class 6 Sulabhbharati prose piece is a first-person account of a joyful holiday spent at the narrator's maternal uncle's village.
Summary
In this part the narrator tells us that the annual exams have just ended and he and his sister Rima return home. As soon as they arrive, mother announces the trip to their uncle's village by train. On hearing this, Rima's joy knows no bounds - she jumps around and runs through the house with her anklets jingling. This shows how thrilled children feel about visiting relatives during a holiday.
The second part describes the journey itself. In the morning everyone boards the train, which moves ahead with a rhythmic clatter. The narrator tells us that Rima, seated by the window, had her hair blown about by the wind, and the sunlight made her squint, yet her face still looked cheerful. Mother, meanwhile, was so absorbed in her book that she barely noticed her surroundings. The narrator himself gazed out at the passing scenery, enjoying the cool gusts of wind. This part shows how simple, ordinary moments of a journey can stay in one's memory.
The third part describes what happens after they get off the train. Uncle is waiting at the station with the bullock cart, and Rima runs ahead to greet him. Everyone climbs into the cart and the ride begins. The narrator tells us that the jingling of the bells around the bullocks' necks and the creaking of the wheels together create their own rhythm. As evening falls, the rustling leaves, the gurgling river, chirping birds and the sounds of cows and goats all blend together. The crops sway gently in the breeze, filling the narrator's heart with joy. This part shows how vividly a rural evening can be brought to life in words.
The fourth part captures the emotional moments of arriving home. Aunt welcomes everyone with a warm smile, and the cousins Raju and Chimi, who have been waiting eagerly, rush to embrace them. Then grandmother arrives slowly, leaning on her walking stick. The children cling to her, and she draws them close, stroking their heads and faces with affection. The narrator tells us that her trembling touch spoke more than words could, and it moved the children deeply. This part reveals the depth of love shown by elders in the family.
The final part describes the everyday fun of the holiday. The narrator tells us that the following days turn into pure joy for the children - swimming in the well one day, romping freely in the fields another, and climbing mango trees to pluck raw mangoes on yet another. Riding out with uncle in the bullock cart, sometimes to the fields and sometimes to the mango orchard, also becomes a regular routine. With so much continuous fun, the children lose track of how the days passed, and they suddenly realise the holiday has ended. This part highlights the innocent joy of childhood and the importance of time spent close to nature.
