About the author

Dhundiraj Joshi is the poet of this thoughtful poem. Featured in the Class 6 Sulabhbharati textbook, it invites young readers to reflect on what truly makes a house a home.

Summary

In the opening stanza the poet rejects a narrow definition of home and offers a positive one instead. He says a home is not merely four constructed walls, but a beautiful, worthy act - meaning a home takes shape through the good conduct of the people living in it. He also clarifies that a home is not a lifeless object but a living structure that brings joy.

In the second stanza the poet stresses the emotional side of a home. He says a home is not just a count of rooms; the people living in it must share warm, tender feelings. There must be affection and closeness between them. At the end of this stanza the poet calls the home a person's 'first school,' because values and lessons are first learned there, even before any formal schooling.

In the third stanza the poet speaks of a home's uniqueness. A home is not just a place cluttered with belongings, nor merely a shelter that protects from sun and rain. Every home carries its own story - the events and memories that unfold within it give it a distinct character. That is why the poet says every home has its own 'face,' meaning its own unique identity.

In the fourth stanza the poet highlights the home's role as a teacher. A home first teaches a person to see, to walk, and to run - every early act of life is first learned at home. Going further, the poet says the home also teaches us to fight against hardships and gives us the courage to climb the towering mountain of sorrow.

In the fifth stanza the poet expresses certain expectations from a home. A home should stay watchful and give its people a sense of contentment. Most importantly, the poet says a home should stay aware of the times, meaning it should embrace new values and new knowledge as the world changes. He suggests that a true home does not cling to old customs but moves forward with change.

In the final stanza the poet turns to the people who truly make a home. He speaks of the mother's boundless effort in running the household without complaint, the grandmother who charms the children with lovely stories, and the talkative grandfather who fills the home with cheerful conversation. He closes by mentioning the delicious taste of food cooked by mother's hands, which gives the home its real warmth. In this way the poet concludes that, in the end, a home is really the love of the people within it.
