व्युत्पत्ती कोश Vyutpatti Kosh

राधेला घराच्या कोपऱ्यात एक सतार दिसते. ती आजोबांना महाराजांकडून इनाम म्हणून मिळाली होती. राधा आईला विचारते की इनाम म्हणजे काय.

Radha notices a sitar in the corner of the house, given to her grandfather as an inam (gift) by a king. She asks her mother what 'inam' means.

आई सांगते की आजोबांच्या खोलीत मराठी व्युत्पत्ती कोश आहे, त्यात इनाम शब्द कसा तयार झाला ते सापडेल. व्युत्पत्ती म्हणजे शब्दाच्या अर्थाचे किंवा मुळाचे ज्ञान.

The mother explains that the grandfather's room has a Marathi etymology dictionary that shows how 'inam' was formed. Etymology means knowledge of a word's root or meaning; a collection of many such word-origins is an etymology dictionary.

कोशात 'अर.' लिहिले आहे म्हणजे इनाम हा अरबी शब्द आहे. '-दार' हा फारसी प्रत्यय असून तो स्वामित्व दाखवतो. म्हणून इनामदार म्हणजे ज्याच्याजवळ इनाम आहे तो.

The dictionary marks 'Ar.' meaning 'inam' is an Arabic word, and '-dar' is a Persian suffix showing possession. So 'inamdar' means one who holds an inam, just as 'jababdar' (responsible) means one who holds responsibility.

काळानुसार शब्दांचे रूप आणि अर्थ बदलतात. 'अग्नि' पासून प्राकृतात 'अग्गि' आणि मग मराठी-हिंदीत 'आग' असा सोपा शब्द झाला. भाषा बदलण्यामागे सोपे करण्याची प्रवृत्ती असते.

Over time, words change form and meaning. From 'agni' came Prakrit 'aggi' and then the simpler 'aag' in Marathi and Hindi, driven by a tendency to simplify. When speakers of different languages meet, words are exchanged, and all this is recorded in the etymology dictionary.

'दिवाळी' हा शब्द संस्कृत 'दीपावलि' पासून आला. कोशात आधी शब्दाची जात (पुं., स्त्री., न.), मग अर्थ आणि कंसात इतर भाषांतील लघुरूपे (सं., प्रा., बं., हिं. इ.) दिलेली असतात.

The word 'Diwali' comes from Sanskrit 'deepavali'. A dictionary entry first gives the part of speech (masculine, feminine, neuter), then meanings, and in brackets the abbreviated forms in other languages (Sanskrit, Prakrit, Bengali, Hindi, etc.).

व्युत्पत्ती कोश शब्दाचे मूळ रूप, अर्थातील बदल, उच्चारातील फरक आणि बदलांचे कारण दाखवतो. १९३८ साली मुंबईच्या मराठी साहित्य संमेलनात (अध्यक्ष स्वातंत्र्यवीर सावरकर) कोश रचण्याचा ठराव झाला.

An etymology dictionary shows a word's root form, changes in meaning, differences in pronunciation, and the reasons for change. At the 1938 Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Mumbai (chaired by Swatantryaveer Savarkar) a resolution to create such a dictionary was passed.

बॅ. मुकुंदराव जयकर यांच्या आर्थिक मदतीने १९४६ साली पहिला मराठी व्युत्पत्ती कोश प्रकाशित झाला. 'ताकास तूर लागू न देणे' या वाक्प्रचाराचे मूळही (ताका=तागा, तूर=विणकराचे लाकूड) कोश व शब्दकोश उलगडतात.

With the financial help of Barrister Mukundrao Jayakar, the first Marathi etymology dictionary was published in 1946. The idiom 'taakaas toor laagoo na dene' is also explained through dictionaries, where 'taakaa' means a roll of cloth and 'toor' the weaver's wooden beam.
