Summary
The story begins when Sushrut's school announces a trip to Bhilar, a village famous for books. The teacher shares interesting facts about it in class and shows a short film, leaving Sushrut delighted. That night, once asleep at home, he has a strange dream, imaginary child-like figures representing books hold hands, hum tunes, and dance around him, gently shaking him awake. Startled at first, he is told they have come simply to be his friends, and from that point each literary form takes its turn introducing itself.
The first to step forward is the story-form character, Katha. Seeing Sushrut nervous, she reassures him, explaining that children first bond with her through simple household tales, animal fables of a clever fox or a foolish mouse, told by elders at home. Her strength lies in a gripping opening and a memorable close, and she takes many shapes: moral tales, science-based tales, historical accounts, and adventure stories. She proudly notes that she supplies the very foundation for films, serials and plays, and that it is skilful narration which keeps a reader hooked. She adds that many senior and newer Marathi writers have enriched this literary form.
Next comes a larger character who calls herself Story's elder sister, the Novel. Though essentially an extended story, she has a far wider canvas, she explains. With many intertwined characters, gradually unfolding relationships, and a plot that develops step by step, she draws the reader in so completely that its characters begin to feel like people from one's own life. She recalls, with visible pride, that one celebrated Marathi novel earned the nation's highest literary honour.
The third character gently rests a hand on Sushrut's shoulder, she is Poetry. They are already close acquaintances, since he hums many textbook verses to a tune already. Her hallmark is packing a vast meaning into very few words, and she is adorned by devices that give her sound its music and others that give her meaning its depth, she explains. Sushrut himself points out that once set to a melody, she turns into a song. Marathi Language Honour Day, she notes, falls on the birthday of a revered poet famous as the author of 'Natsamrat', whose poetry collection won the country's highest literary honour. She adds that countless gifted poets across generations have adorned her with their craft.
Next a familiar voice calls out to Sushrut, it is Drama. He explains that vivid characters, sharp, crackling dialogue and suspenseful turns of event earn him a permanent place in an audience's heart. A playwright must always stay aware that the work is ultimately meant for the stage, so visual impact matters just as much as readability, he says. When Sushrut mentions a fine performance he recently watched, Drama says handing his script over to a director is a joyful moment. He proudly notes that playwrights across several generations have nurtured and expanded Marathi theatre through this literary form.
Then a soft voice calls to Sushrut, this character is Biography. He explains that he is born when a writer, moved by the life of an extraordinary achiever, sets that person's journey down in words. Struggle, accomplishment and the will to turn opportunity into gold are his defining traits, and through them he shapes the outlook of ordinary readers, he says proudly. Right after him comes a similar but subtly different character, who explains that he belongs to the same family, except that where Biography writes about someone else, in his case, Autobiography, the very person recounts their own life's ups, downs, turning points and experiences with honest objectivity.
At the very end, a character appears whom Sushrut has not yet spoken with, he calls himself Sushrut's companion for touring the world without leaving home, Travelogue. He explains that his special skill is presenting real places, people, customs and personal experience from an actual journey in lively, engaging language while staying truthful. Sushrut jokes that with his help he could travel the whole world without a ticket or visa. All the literary forms then promise together, in one voice, never to abandon Sushrut, and finally they all join in a shared song celebrating the rainbow-hued glory of the Marathi language and the joy of reading. It is at this musical moment that Sushrut's dream ends.
