डॉ. काकोडकर मोठ्या होत जाणाऱ्या मुलांना उद्देशून पत्र लिहितात. आपल्या 'बार्क' या अणुसंशोधन संस्थेतील दोन जुने अनुभव सांगून, त्यातून मुलांना स्वतःची दिशा ठरवण्यास मदत व्हावी, असा त्यांचा हेतू आहे. कॉलेज संपवून ते नुकतेच बार्कच्या प्रशिक्षण शाळेत रुजू झाले होते, तेव्हाची ही आठवण आहे.

Dr. Kakodkar writes this letter to children who are growing up. His purpose is to share two old experiences from his time at BARC, the nuclear research institute, so that children may find help in shaping their own paths. This memory dates back to when he had just finished college and joined BARC's training school.

बार्क ही संस्था तेव्हा जेमतेम सात वर्षांची होती आणि सुमारे शंभर विद्यार्थी तिथे प्रशिक्षण घेत. एकदा विद्यार्थ्यांनी संस्थापक डॉ. भाभांना विचारले की एवढ्या साऱ्यांना पुरेल इतके काम इथे कुठे आहे. डॉ. भाभांनी उत्तर दिले की खर्चाची चिंता न करता संशोधन करत राहा, आणि स्वतःच स्वतःचे काम ठरवायला शिका, वरिष्ठाने सांगितलेलेच काम करायचे आणि बाकी वेळ रिकामे बसायचे ही वृत्ती योग्य नाही. हा विचार डॉ. काकोडकरांच्या मनावर कायमचा ठसला.

BARC was barely seven years old at the time, with about a hundred students in training. Once, the students asked founder Dr. Bhabha whether there was enough work at the institute to keep them all occupied. Dr. Bhabha replied that they should keep researching without worrying about costs, and learn to define their own work themselves, that waiting idly for a superior to assign tasks was the wrong attitude. This thought left a permanent mark on young Kakodkar's mind.

पुढे इंजिनियर बनून रुजू झाल्यावर त्यांच्याकडे धातूचा पातळ लेप चढवण्याच्या एका प्रक्रियेचे काम आले. या कामासाठी मदतनीस मिळावेत अशी विनंती त्यांनी केली, पण वरिष्ठांचे उत्तर होते, हे तू एकट्यानेच निभावून दाखव. जिद्दीने राबून त्यांनी ते काम तडीस नेले, आणि तेव्हाच त्याच वरिष्ठांचा दृष्टिकोन बदलला, आता हवे तितके हात मदतीला मिळू लागले, कारण त्यांची कुवत सिद्ध झाली होती. यातूनच 'स्वतः करून दाखवणे, मगच दुसऱ्याला सांगणे' हे सूत्र त्यांना उमगले.

Once his training ended and he joined as an engineer, he was assigned work on a metallising process. He asked for a welder and a foreman to help, but his seniors refused, telling him to manage entirely on his own. Once he had, through hard effort, completed the task, those same seniors were now willing to give him as many assistants as he needed, because they now trusted his competence. From this he learned the lesson: first prove you can do it yourself, only then ask others to help.

अर्धशतकापूर्वी घडलेले हे दोन प्रसंग आजही त्यांना तितकेच बहुमोल भासतात. आयुष्याच्या पहिल्या टप्प्यात कुणाचा तरी आधार, कुणाचे तरी बोट धरून चालणे स्वाभाविक असते, पण एका टप्प्यानंतर स्वतःचे बळ स्वतः उभे करता आले पाहिजे, स्वतःची वाट स्वतः निवडता आली पाहिजे, हाच संदेश ते तरुण पिढीपर्यंत पोहोचवतात. हा विचार लवकर आत्मसात केला, तर उभे आयुष्य घडवताना त्याचा नक्की उपयोग होईल, असा भरवसा ते देतात.

Even after almost fifty years, these two experiences feel just as valuable to Dr. Kakodkar. It is fine to be guided by the hand for the first eight or ten years, he says, but eventually one must learn to make oneself capable, to find one's own paths. This is the message he leaves for children - if grasped early, it will surely prove useful on the journey of growing up.
