वसंतहृदय चैत्र Vasanthruday Chaitra

फाल्गुन, चैत्र आणि वैशाख हे वसंताचे तीन महिने आहेत. पण चैत्र हाच खरा वसंताचा प्राण म्हणजे मधुमास आहे, असे लेखिका सांगतात. या महिन्यात फुलांतून आणि फळांतून मधुरस वाहत असतो.

Phalgun, Chaitra and Vaishakh are the three months of spring, yet Chaitra is its true soul, the honey-month; quoting Dnyaneshwar, the author says that in this month not only beauty but the very form of the fruits is captivating and sweet sap flows through flowers and fruits.

चैत्रात पिंपळाच्या झाडांना गहिऱ्या गुलाबी रंगाची कोवळी पाने येतात. ती उन्हात चमकतात तेव्हा झाडावर जणू सुंदर फुलांचे गेंद फुलले आहेत असे वाटते. लेखिकेच्या घराजवळच्या पिंपळावर मधुमालतीची वेल चढली असून ती गुलाबी गेंदांनी भरली आहे.

In Chaitra the peepal grows deep pink silken new leaves that, glinting in the sun, look like balls of flowers on the tree; the leaves keep rustling. The peepal near the authors house is wrapped on all sides by a huge Madhumalati creeper packed with pink blossoms, while reddish leaves and green fruit cling along its branches.

घाणेरी या झाडाला उग्र वास असला तरी ती दुरंगी फुलांच्या गुच्छांनी भरलेली शोभिवंत दिसते. गुजरातमध्ये याच फुलाला 'चुनडी' असे सुंदर नाव आहे. भडक रंगांचे मिश्रण निसर्गात विसंगत न वाटता एकमेकांची शोभा वाढवते, असे लेखिका सांगतात.

The strong-smelling Ghaneri looks splendid with its clusters of two-coloured flowers; gaudy pairings that would seem clashing elsewhere actually enhance one another in nature. In Gujarat it bears the apt name Chunadi, which reveals to the author the secret of the bright Chunadis of Kathiawad and Rajputana, and she marvels that Indian taste in colour springs from the local climate and natural display.

माडाच्या झाडांना फाल्गुनात फुलांच्या लोंब्या येतात; नारळाचे तीन पाकळ्यांचे नखाएवढे फूल पाहून गंमत वाटते. शेजारचे कडुनिंब निळसर फुलांच्या तुऱ्यांनी भरते आणि कडवट उग्र वासाचे करंजाचे झाडही फुलते. करंजाचे फूल टोपी घातलेल्या बाल घनश्यामासारखे दिसते.

From the crown of the coconut palm a spathe bursts open and cane-coloured strings of flowers come out; the tiny three-petalled pale-yellow coconut flower charms by its shape. Nearby the neem fills with bluish flower-sprays whose fragrance is lovely at night, and the bitter pungent Karanj too blooms; its blue-purple bud under a white half-round cap looks just like the infant Ghanshyam wearing a bonnet.

चैत्रातल्या फळशोभेचे वर्णन आंबा आणि फणसाशिवाय पूर्ण होत नाही. आंब्याला लांब देठांना कैऱ्यांचे हिरवे गोळे लागतात आणि पोपट-कावळे, कोकिळा त्या झाडांवर असतात. फणसाला फुले न येता हिरवे कोके येऊन त्यांपासून फणस तयार होतो आणि तो झाडाला पायापासून डोकीपर्यंत लादला जातो.

On the mangos long stalks hang green clusters of raw mangoes swinging in the breeze while parrots and crows peck at the ripening fruit and the cuckoo sings in trees outside the village; though leaves fall the tree never looks bare. The jackfruit bears no flowers but green pods in Paush-Magh; each pod splits and the smooth jackfruit grows, loading the tree from foot to head, sometimes with a fruit half-buried in the soil.

रूप, रस आणि गंधाने भरलेल्या या चैत्र महिन्याची शोभा झाडांवरच्या पक्ष्यांच्या घरट्यांनी पूर्ण होते. काही लोंबती, काही चेंडूसारखी वाटोळी अशी ही काळीकबरी घरटी लेखिकेला वसंताच्या चित्रलिपीतली सुंदर विरामचिन्हे वाटतात.

The beauty of this form-flavour-fragrance-filled Chaitra is completed by the birds nests, some being built and some finished, on the trees; these dark mottled nests, hanging, ball-round or flat, seem to the author like lovely punctuation marks in springs picture-script, and she would rather watch these plain marks than search out the vast script of nature.
