उत्तमलक्षण Uttamlakshan

ऐकणाऱ्यांनो, लक्ष देऊन सावध व्हा. आता मी उत्तम गुण सांगतो. हे गुण आचरणात आणले की सर्वज्ञपणाची, म्हणजे शहाणपणाची खूण अंगी बाणते.

Listeners, be attentive; now I tell the noble qualities. Practising them imprints the mark of wisdom upon a person.

वाट विचारल्याशिवाय जाऊ नये. फळ ओळखल्याशिवाय खाऊ नये. खाली पडलेली वस्तू एकाएकी उचलून घेऊ नये.

Do not go without asking the way, do not eat a fruit without knowing it, and do not pick up a fallen object hastily.

लोकांतील सरळपणा, प्रामाणिकपणा तोडू नये. पापाने मिळवलेले धन जोडू नये. पुण्याचा, चांगुलपणाचा मार्ग कधीही सोडू नये.

Do not break sincerity in dealings with people, do not amass wealth gained through sin, and never abandon the path of virtue.

तोंडाळ म्हणजे भांडखोर माणसाशी भांडू नये. वाचाळ, बडबड्या माणसाशी वाद घालू नये. संतांची संगत मनातून कधीही तोडू नये.

Do not quarrel with a foul-mouthed person, do not argue with a chatterer, and never sever the company of saints from your heart.

आळसात सुख मानू नये. दुसऱ्याची चहाडी, चुगली मनात आणू नये. कोणतेही काम नीट शोध घेतल्याशिवाय, तपासल्याशिवाय करू नये.

Do not find pleasure in laziness, do not entertain slander in your mind, and do not undertake any task without proper inquiry.

सभेमध्ये लाजू नये. पोकळ, मूर्खपणाचे बोलू नये. कोणत्याही कारणाने पैज किंवा होड लावू नये.

Do not be shy in an assembly, do not speak foolish empty words, and do not make wagers or bets on any account.

कोणाचे उपकार घेऊ नयेत. घेतलेच तर ते लक्षात ठेवावेत, विसरू नयेत. दुसऱ्याला त्रास देऊ नये आणि विश्वासघात करू नये.

Do not take favours; if taken, do not forget them, do not cause others pain, and never betray trust.

मनाचा मोठेपणा, उदारपणा सोडू नये. दुसऱ्यावर अवलंबून, परावलंबी होऊ नये. आपले ओझे कोणावरही टाकू नये.

Do not give up broad-mindedness, do not become dependent on others, and do not place your burden on anyone.

सत्याचा मार्ग सोडू नये. असत्याच्या वाटेने जाऊ नये. असत्याचा अभिमान कधीही बाळगू नये.

Do not abandon the path of truth, do not walk the way of falsehood, and never take pride in untruth.

वाईट कीर्ती, बदनामी सोडावी. चांगली कीर्ती वाढवावी. विवेकाने सत्याची वाट घट्ट धरून ठेवावी.

Shed ill fame, increase good repute, and with discretion hold firmly to the path of truth.
