सोनाली Sonali

लेखकाला एका जंगली प्राण्यावर पोटच्या मुलासारखे प्रेम करायचे होते. २९ ऑगस्ट १९७३ रोजी तीन सिंहाच्या पिलांतून त्याने सगळ्यात शांत व थोडे सशक्त पिल्लू निवडले आणि घरी आणले.

The writer wanted to love a wild animal like his own child, not just train it like a circus. From three cubs he picked the calmest, slightly stronger one and brought it home.

त्याच ऑगस्ट महिन्यात घरात रूपाली नावाची पांढरी कुत्री आणि दीपाली नावाची नात आली होती. सोन्यासारखे केस असलेल्या या मादीला लेखकाने 'सोनाली' हे नाव दिले.

That same August the white pup Rupali and a granddaughter Dipali had also arrived. Because of her golden hair the writer named the lioness 'Sonali'.

सुरुवातीला रूपाली व सोनालीचे पटत नव्हते, पण चार दिवसांनी त्यांची घट्ट मैत्री झाली. त्या एकत्र खेळत, खात आणि लेखकाच्या बिछान्यात झोपत. सोनालीला लहान मुलासारखे थोपटून झोपवावे लागे.

After four days Rupali and Sonali became close friends, eating, playing and sleeping together. Sonali, like a small child, had to be patted to sleep.

सोनाली झपाट्याने मोठी झाली, रूपालीच्या दुप्पट-चौपट झाली, पण तिने कधी रूपालीला इजा केली नाही. ती दूधपोळी व दूधभात खाणारी जगातली एकमेव सिंहीण असावी. मोटारीतून फिरतानाही दोघींची जागा ठरलेली होती.

Sonali grew much bigger than Rupali yet never hurt her. She may have been the only lioness in the world who ate milk-roti and milk-rice, and on car rides each had her fixed seat.

एकदा अण्णा जेवणाचा डबा न घेताच गच्चीवर गेले, तेव्हा सोनाली रागावली आणि तिने मोठी डरकाळी फोडली. खाल्ल्यावर ती शांत होऊन लेखकाचे पाय चाटू लागली, जणू माफी मागत होती. दुसऱ्या वेळी तिने पितळी पातेल्याची नुसती चाळणी केली होती.

When Anna came up without the food box Sonali grew angry and roared, then licked the writer's feet as if asking forgiveness. Another time her powerful teeth turned a brass vessel into a sieve.

दीपाली सोनालीच्या जाळीपाशी जाऊन तिच्याशी खेळत असे. एकदा एका पेशंटने दीपालीला उचलले, तेव्हा सोनाली फिसकारून त्याच्या अंगावर धावली. दीपाली घरची आहे, तिला इतरांनी उचलू नये, ही जाणीव सोनालीला झाली होती.

Dipali would play for hours at Sonali's enclosure. When a man lifted Dipali, Sonali charged at him in fury, for she had understood that Dipali belonged to their home and must not be carried off by others.

३१ मार्च १९७४ रोजी सोनालीला पुण्याच्या पेशवे उद्यानात कायमचे ठेवायला नेले. लोकांनी खूप गर्दी केली. लेखकाने तिचा पट्टा सोडला आणि रूपालीला आधी आत पाठवून तिच्या पाठोपाठ सोनालीला पिंजऱ्यात कोंडले. एकटी पडलेली सोनाली बिथरली व ओरडू लागली; जड अंतःकरणाने लेखक परतला.

On 31 March 1974 Sonali was taken to Peshwe Park in Pune for good. Crowds gathered, the Mayor formally accepted her, and she had to be tricked into the cage by first sending Rupali in. Left alone she panicked and cried out, while the writer turned away heavy-hearted.
