निर्णय Nirnay

राजाभाऊ आणि त्यांचा बालमित्र सोमनाथ शहराच्या बाजारपेठेत 'हॉटेल हेरिटेज' चालवतात. वेटरांच्या कटकटींना कंटाळून ते न्यू एज रोबो कंपनीकडून चार रोबो वेटर खरेदी करतात आणि त्यांना रामू, शामू, दिपू व विजू अशी नावे देतात.

Rajabhau and his childhood friend Somnath have run 'Hotel Heritage' for four years. Tired of waiters who shirked work, took sudden leave and quarrelled, they buy four robot waiters and name them Ramu, Shamu, Dipu and Viju.

रोजी रात्री राजाभाऊ रोबोंना चार्ज करत. स्वच्छता, टापटीप आणि विनम्र सेवेमुळे हॉटेलची कमाई वाढू लागली. कंपनीची सर्व्हिस चांगली होती आणि दर दोन महिन्यांनी इंजिनियर येऊन सर्व्हिसिंग करत.

Each night Rajabhau charged the robots. Thanks to their memory cards they did every task unprompted, and the hotel's clean, prompt, polite service soon raised its earnings, while the company's servicing was good.

दुसऱ्या वर्षी कंपनीने सर्व्हिसिंगची फी दुप्पट केली. ती परवडत नाही म्हणून राजाभाऊंनी कंपनीची सर्व्हिस बंद केली आणि स्वतःच एकदा सर्व्हिसिंग केले. वीस हजार रुपये वाचल्याचा त्यांना आनंद झाला.

In the second year the servicing fee doubled. Finding it unaffordable, and trusting what he had learned from the engineer, Rajabhau stopped the company's service and serviced the robots himself, glad to have saved twenty thousand rupees.

लवकरच रोबो बिघडू लागले. शामू कधी फार सावकाश काम करे, तर कधी ताटे उचलून पुन्हा मांडे. गिऱ्हाइके चिडली. बोलावलेल्या इंजिनियरने सांगितले की जास्त वापरामुळे रोबो निकामी झाले असून आता ते फक्त महिनाभरच चालतील.

Once the service stopped, the robots failed: Shamu sometimes worked at a tortoise's pace, sometimes snatched up plates and re-laid them, baffling and angering customers. The engineer who was summoned said overuse had ruined the robots, and after servicing they would last only a month before new ones were needed.

नवे रोबो घ्यायचे की नाही याबद्दल राजाभाऊ द्विधा मनःस्थितीत होते. सोमा मात्र 'रोबो नकोच' यावर ठाम होता. हाताशी एक महिन्याचा अवधी असल्याने सर्व बाजूंनी विचार करून निर्णय घ्यायचे राजाभाऊंनी ठरवले.

Rajabhau was in two minds about buying new robots: the engineer's words tempted him, but the embarrassments warned him off, while Soma was firm against robots. With a month in hand, he decided to weigh all sides before deciding.

एका शनिवारी एक स्त्री दोन मुलांसह एसी रूममध्ये आली. आतून रडण्याचे आवाज आल्याने राजाभाऊंनी रामूला पाठवले, पण 'सर्व ठीक आहे' म्हणून तो परतला. शंका आल्याने मनोजला पाठवले, तेव्हा ती स्त्री बेशुद्ध पडली होती. मनोज व इतरांनी तिला तत्परतेने हॉस्पिटलमध्ये नेले.

One Saturday a woman came into the AC room with two children. As crying grew louder the robot Ramu, sent to check, returned saying only that all was well and the lady was asleep. Suspicious, Rajabhau sent the honest and alert Manoj, who found the woman had fainted; Manoj, Rajabhau and the driver rushed her and the children to hospital.

डॉक्टरांनी सांगितले की रक्तातील साखर कमी झाल्याने ती बेशुद्ध झाली; वेळेत आणल्याने जीव वाचला. रोबोंमुळे पैसा मिळाला पण बदनामीही आली, हे राजाभाऊंना उमगले. मनोजच्या माणुसकीने सारे सावरले. 'माणुसकीमुळेच माणूस श्रेष्ठ ठरतो' हे पटून राजाभाऊंची द्विधा मनःस्थिती कायमची संपली.

The doctor said low blood sugar had made her faint, and bringing her in time had saved her life. Rajabhau realised the robots had brought money but greater disgrace, which Manoj's spontaneous, selfless act had wiped clean. Convinced that 'humanity is what makes a person great', his indecision ended for good.
