गोष्ट अरुणिमाची Gosht Arunimachi

अरुणिमा सिन्हा स्वतःची ओळख सांगते. ती माउंट एव्हरेस्ट सर करणारी पहिली अपंग महिला आहे; पण ती जन्मतः अपंग नव्हती, धडधाकट होती. आंबेडकरनगर हे तिचे गाव; घरी ती, आई, लहान भाऊ. भाईसाब (मोठ्या बहिणीचे पती) घरचे महत्त्वाचे निर्णय घेत.

Arunima Sinha introduces herself. She is the first physically disabled woman to climb Mount Everest, but she was not born disabled. She is from Ambedkarnagar; her family loves sport, and her brother-in-law (Bhaisaab) takes the family's important decisions.

फुटबॉल व व्हॉलीबॉलची राष्ट्रीय चॅम्पियन असलेल्या अरुणिमाला CISF ची नोकरी मिळणार होती; पण फॉर्ममध्ये जन्मतारीख चुकल्याने ती ११ एप्रिल २०११ रोजी दिल्लीला निघाली. पद्मावती एक्सप्रेसमध्ये काही चोरांनी तिची सोन्याची चेन हिसकावण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. तिने प्रतिकार करताच त्यांनी तिला चालत्या गाडीतून बाहेर फेकले.

Arunima, a national champion, was travelling to Delhi to fix an error in a form when robbers on the Padmavati Express tried to snatch her gold chain. When she fought back, they threw her off the moving train.

As many as 49 trains passed over her leg that night. She lay on the tracks for seven hours, begging for help, yet she did not lose consciousness. In the Bareilly hospital, with no anaesthetist and not enough blood, she let her leg be amputated without anaesthesia.

The story was picked up by the media and she was moved to AIIMS in Delhi, but some reports spread false rumours that she had jumped or attempted suicide. Lying in hospital, Arunima resolved that one day she would climb Everest. Her family and Bhaisaab stood firmly behind her.

गिर्यारोहणाचा पहिला टप्पा म्हणून ती बचेंद्री पाल यांच्याकडे गेली; एव्हरेस्ट सर करणाऱ्या पहिल्या महिलेने तिच्या ध्येयाचा आदर केला व प्रोत्साहन दिले. 'नेहरू गिरिभ्रमण प्रशिक्षण केंद्रा'त दीड वर्ष खडतर प्रशिक्षण झाले. कृत्रिम पाय रोवणे कठीण होते आणि दुसऱ्या पायातील रॉडवर दाब आला की तीव्र वेदना होत.

Her first step was to meet Bachendri Pal, the first woman to climb Everest, who respected her goal and encouraged her. At the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering she trained hard for a year and a half, enduring pain from her artificial leg and the steel rod in the other leg.

५२ दिवसांच्या लढाईत अरुणिमा नेहमी इतर गिर्यारोहकांच्या पुढे असे. 'डेथ झोन'मध्ये मृतदेह, गोठवणारी थंडी आणि मृत्यूचे जवळून दर्शन होत होते. २१ मे २०१३ रोजी, ऑक्सिजन कमी असूनही 'आता नाहीतर कधीच नाही' असे ठरवून तिने एव्हरेस्ट सर केले व भारताचा ध्वज फडकवला.

Over a 52-day struggle Arunima stayed ahead of the other climbers. In the Death Zone she faced corpses, freezing cold and death close by. On 21 May 2013, though low on oxygen, with a 'now or never' resolve she summited Everest and unfurled the Indian flag.

उतरताना तिचा ऑक्सिजन संपला; पण एका ब्रिटिश माणसाने ओझे म्हणून फेकलेला एक सिलिंडर मिळाल्याने तिचा जीव वाचला. ती सहीसलामत खाली उतरली. ती सांगते, आपण काय मिळवतो हे नव्हे, तर ती कमाई आपल्याला अधिक चांगली व्यक्ती कशी बनवते हे महत्त्वाचे. प्रयत्न निष्फळ होणे म्हणजे अपयश नव्हे, तर कमकुवत ध्येय म्हणजे अपयश.

While descending her oxygen ran out, but a cylinder a British man had discarded saved her, and she came down safely. She says what matters is not what we achieve but how that achievement makes us a better person; a weak goal, not a failed effort, is real failure.
