गवताचे पाते Gavatache Pate

हिवाळा नुकताच सुरू झाला होता. झाडावरून पिकलेली पाने एकामागून एक 'पट पट' आवाज करत गळून पडू लागली.

Winter had just begun. One after another the ripe leaves dropped from the tree with a harsh 'pat pat' sound.

त्या आवाजाने धरणीमातेच्या कुशीत झोपलेले एक चिमणे गवताचे पाते जागे झाले. त्याची गोड स्वप्ने मोडली म्हणून ते रागावले.

That sound woke a tiny blade of grass asleep in Mother Earth's lap. It was upset because its sweet dreams had been shattered.

खाली येणाऱ्या पानाला गवताचे पाते म्हणाले, 'पडता पडता एवढी कटकट का करतोस? तुझ्या दंग्यानं माझ्या गोड स्वप्नांचा चुराडा झाला.'

To a leaf spinning down to the ground the blade said, 'Why do you fuss so much while falling? Your racket has wrecked all my sweet dreams.'

पान चिडले आणि म्हणाले, 'मातीत लोळणाऱ्या क्षुद्र गवताला आमच्या उंच जगाची कल्पना कशी येणार? हा दंगा नाही, हे गाणं आहे; तुझ्यासारख्या अरसिकाला ते समजणार नाही.'

Angered, the leaf boasted of its high station: 'How can a lowly blade born and rolling in the dust grasp our lofty world? This is no racket, this is a song; an unfeeling thing like you will never understand.'

असे बोलून पान खाली पडले आणि मातीत झोपी गेले. वसंत ऋतूच्या संजीवक स्पर्शाने त्याच पानाचे रूपांतर एका चिमुकल्या गवताच्या पात्यात झाले.

Saying this, the leaf fell to the earth and slept in Mother Earth's lap. Later the life-giving touch of spring turned that very leaf into a tiny blade of grass.

पुन्हा हिवाळा आला. आता तेच गवताचे पाते झाडांवरून पडणाऱ्या पानांच्या 'पट पट' आवाजाने वैतागले आणि 'या पानांनी माझ्या गोड स्वप्नांचा चेंदामेंदा केला' म्हणून तक्रार करू लागले.

Winter came again. Now that same blade of grass, woken repeatedly by the 'pat pat' of falling leaves, frowned and grumbled, 'What leaves of winter these are! They have crushed all my sweet dreams.'

एकेकाळी ज्या पानाला तक्रार करणारे पाते क्षुद्र वाटले, तेच पान आता पाते झाल्यावर तीच तक्रार करते. यातून दिसते की माणसातील तीच तीच मनोवृत्ती वारंवार घडत राहते.

The leaf that once mocked the complaining blade as unfeeling and lowly makes the very same complaint once it becomes a blade. The writer shows that though outward form changes, fixed human attitudes keep repeating and the gap between generations remains.
