आश्वासक चित्र Aashwasak Chitra

तापलेल्या उन्हाच्या सावलीत बसून एक मुलगी कधीपासून खेळते आहे. कवयित्री आपल्या घराच्या झरोक्यातून (छोट्या खिडकीतून) तिच्याकडे पाहत राहते.

A little girl has been playing for a long while, seated in the shade beside the hot sun. The poet watches her through the small window of her house.

मुलगी बाहुलीला मांडीवर घेते, एका हाताने तिला थोपटते आणि भातुकलीतल्या छोट्याशा गॅसवर भाताचे आधण चढवते. म्हणजे ती 'घर' सांभाळण्याचा खेळ खेळते.

The girl takes her doll in her lap, pats it with one hand, and sets rice to boil on the tiny toy stove of her play-kitchen, acting out the traditional game of keeping house.

बाजूला एक मुलगा हातात चेंडू घेऊन खेळतो आहे. तो चेंडू खूप उंच उडवतो आणि नेमका हातात झेलतो. मुलगी कौतुकाने त्याच्याकडे पाहत राहते.

Nearby a boy is playing with a ball; he throws it very high and catches it cleanly in his hand. The girl keeps watching his skill with admiration.

मुलगी अचानक बाहुली बाजूला ठेवून मुलाजवळ जाते. मुलगा पुन्हा एकदा आपले कसब दाखवतो. मुलगी त्याच्याकडे चेंडू मागते, तेव्हा तो हसून म्हणतो, 'तू छानपैकी पाल्याची भाजी बनव.' (म्हणजे तू तुझा 'मुलींचा' खेळच कर.)

Suddenly the girl sets the doll aside and goes to the boy. He shows off his skill once more. When she asks for the ball, he laughs and says, 'You go make a nice dish of greens', nudging her back to the 'girl's' game.

मुलगी म्हणते, 'मी दोन्हीही एकाच वेळी करू शकते. तू करशील?' मुलगा तिच्या हातात चेंडू देतो. तिने उंच उडवलेला चेंडू आभाळाला शिवून नेमका तिच्या ओंजळीत येऊन पडतो. मुलगा आश्चर्याने पाहत राहतो.

The girl says confidently, 'I can do both at the same time. Can you?' The boy hands her the ball; the ball she throws touches the sky and lands exactly in her cupped hands, and the boy looks on amazed.

मुलगी हसून म्हणते, 'आता तू.' मुलगा मांडी घालून गॅससमोर बसतो. दोन्ही हातांनी थोपटून आधी बाहुलीला झोपवतो, मग भाजीसाठी पातेले शोधतो. तोही हळूहळू आपले कसब दाखवतानाच घर सांभाळणे शिकेल.

Smiling, she says, 'Now you.' The boy sits cross-legged before the stove, pats the doll to sleep with both hands, then looks for a pan to cook in. He too will slowly learn to keep house even while showing his skill.

कवयित्रीला आपल्या झरोक्यातून उद्याच्या जगाचे एक आश्वासक चित्र दिसते, जिथे सारेच खेळ एकत्र खेळले जातील. भातुकलीतून खऱ्या आयुष्यात पाऊल टाकताना दोघांचा हातात हात असेल आणि त्या हातांवर बाहुली व चेंडू दोन्ही एकत्र सहज विसावतील.

Through her window the poet sees a hopeful picture of tomorrow's world, where every game will be played together. As the children step from play into real life, hand will rest in hand, and on those joined hands both the doll and the ball will rest easily, side by side.
