आजी : कुटुंबाचं आगळ Aaji : Kutumbacha Aagal

लेखक आपल्या आजीचं वर्णन करतो. ती साडेपाच फूट उंच, गोरी पण उन्हापावसाने रापलेली. सत्तरी ओलांडली तरी हातात काठी नाही, सगळे दात शाबूत, डोक्यात एकही काळा केस नाही. ताठ कणा, नऊवारी इरकल लुगडं अशी तिची ठेवण होती.

The writer paints a portrait of his grandmother: about five and a half feet tall, fair but weathered by sun and rain, walking without a stick even past seventy, all her teeth intact, an upright spine, dressed in a green-and-red nine-yard Irkal sari.

आजीच्या छत्रछायेखाली सगळं कुटुंब गुण्यागोविंदाने नांदत होतं. घरी कपिली नावाची गावरान गाय होती. ती भरपूर दूध द्यायची. वडील किंवा काका धार काढायला निघाले की मुलं ग्लास घेऊन गोठ्यात जायची आणि उबदार धारोष्ण दूध तिथेच पीत.

Under the grandmother's care the whole family lived in harmony. They had a country cow called Kapili that gave plenty of milk; when the father or uncle milked her, the children would go to the cowshed with glasses and drink the warm fresh milk right there.

आजी सोप्यात बसून माळेचे मणी ओढत राही, पण तिचं खरं काम म्हणजे सुनांवर पहारा. चार सुनांपैकी कुणी कुणाच्या मुलाला कमी-जास्त देऊ नये म्हणून मुलांना गोठ्यातच दूध मिळावं असा तिचा कटाक्ष. तिने सगळ्या सुनांना भाकरी, धुणं, कालवण, भांडी अशी कामांची रोटेशनप्रमाणे वाटणी करून दिली होती.

Sitting in the hall, the grandmother fingered her prayer beads but really kept strict watch over the daughters-in-law. So that no one favoured her own child, she insisted the children get milk in the cowshed itself; she had divided the chores (cooking, washing, curry, dishes) by weekly rotation and made sure each woman learned every task.

दुपारी मुलांना शाळेत पाठवून आजी ढाळजेत बसे. तिची झोप अतिशय सावध होती; जरा खुट्ट झालं की ती जागी होई. गल्लीतल्या बायका कामं घेऊन येत, गप्पा-चर्चा होई. लेखक म्हणतो, आमची ढाळज म्हणजे गावाचं वर्तमानपत्र होतं आणि आजी त्याची संपादक होती. सगळ्या बातम्यांची शहानिशा करूनच त्या गावभर जात.

After packing the children off to school the grandmother sat in the verandah (dhalaj); her sleep was very light, the slightest sound woke her. Neighbourhood women came with chores and chatted. The writer says their dhalaj was the village newspaper and the grandmother was its editor: news was verified there before it spread through the village.

रात्री आठच्या सुमारास दरवाजा बंद करून आतून आगळ टाकली की वाडा शांत होई. ही सहा फूट लांब सागवानी आगळ भिंतीतल्या देवळीत आरपार जायची. पितळी वाघाच्या जबड्यातल्या कडीला हात घालून ती ओढणं-ढकलणं मुलांना अवघड गणित वाटे. ही आगळ म्हणजे दरवाजाचं, पर्यायाने वाड्याचं भरभक्कम संरक्षक कवच होतं.

Around eight at night the door was shut and the bolt drawn from inside, and the mansion fell quiet. This six-foot teak bolt slid right through a niche in the wall; reaching into the brass tiger's-jaw ring to pull and push it felt like a hard feat to the children. The bolt was the strong protective shield of the door, and so of the whole mansion.

मुलं ढाळजेत, पडवीत बैठे खेळ खेळत : चिंचोके, गजगं, भोवरा, गोट्या. सरपणातली लाकडं काढून विटी-दांडू, भोवरे बनवत. कधी विहिरीवर पोहायला, देवळात, वडाच्या पारंब्यांना झोके घ्यायला जात. गाभोळ्या चिंचा, कच्च्या कैऱ्या, बोरं, हुरडा असा रानमेवा खात.

The children played sit-down games in the verandah (tamarind seeds, gajga, spinning tops, marbles) and made gilli-danda and tops from firewood. Sometimes they swam in the well, rang temple bells, swung on banyan roots. They ate wild treats: tender tamarind, raw mangoes, ber, roasted jowar (hurda).

खेळून थकलेली, लाल डोळे आणि पांढरं पडलेलं अंग घेऊन मुलं घरी येत तेव्हा आजीचं बोलणं खात. अशा निसर्गदत्त वातावरणात त्यांचं बालपण आकारत होतं. ढाळजेत आजीच्या धाकात अभ्यास करत आणि आजीच्या मायेच्या सावलीखाली मुलं मोठी होत होती.

Coming home tired with red eyes and pale bodies, the children would be scolded by the grandmother. In this gift of nature their childhood took shape; quarrelling, then playing together again, studying in the verandah under her watchful eye, they grew up in the loving shade of their grandmother.
