About the author
M.T. Vasudevan Nair, a giant of Malayalam literature whose works moved from novels to cinema. The 1998 film Daya (dir. Venu, starring Manju Warrier) is from Adisthana Padavali, Unit 2.
Summary
ഇസ്ലാമിന് മുമ്പുള്ള മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റ് - ആയിരത്തൊന്നു രാവുകളിലെ സുമുഹൂദിന്റെ കഥയെ ആശ്രയിച്ച ചിത്രം.
The 1998 Malayalam film Daya, scripted by M.T. and directed by Venu, is a loose adaptation of Scheherazade's tale from Arabian Nights with slight plot changes.
ധനിക പ്രഭുവിന്റെ മകൻ മൻസൂർ അതിരുകടന്ന ജീവിതം നയിക്കുന്നു; വിശ്വസ്ത അടിമ പെൺകുട്ടി ദയ അവനോടൊപ്പം.
Mansour, son of a wealthy lord, lives recklessly; after his father's death he wastes wealth and loses friends - only the loyal slave girl Daya stays.
ദയയെ അടിമയായി വിൽക്കാൻ നിർദ്ദേശം; രാജാവിന്റെ ദൂതന്മാർ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തി കോടതിയിൽ ബുദ്ധി പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്നു.
He is told to sell Daya as a slave; the king's envoys stop the sale and test her wit in court - she passes and wins rewards.
അടിമ വ്യാപാരികളായ അലിഷായും റാഷിദും ദയയെ തട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു; മൻസൂർ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ പദ്ധതിയിടുന്നു.
Slave traders Ali Sha and Rashid kidnap Daya; Mansour plans a rescue with help from his neighbour Amina.
മിന്നൽ ജവാനിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ ദയ പുരുഷവേഷം ധരിച്ച് മറ്റൊരു രാജ്യത്തേക്ക് യാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്നു.
Mansour arrives late; Daya is caught by the lightning guard but escapes disguised as a man and travels to another kingdom.

In male disguise she wins archery, sword-fight and other trials; she lets the king win at chess yet charms him and becomes minister.
മന്ത്രി എന്ന നിലയിൽ തന്നോട് മോശമായി പെരുമാറിയവരോട് ദയ ബുദ്ധിപൂർവ്വം പ്രതികാരം ചെയ്യുന്നു.
As minister, with Amina's help, Daya cleverly takes revenge on everyone who wronged her.
രാജാവിന്റെ മകൾ മോഹിക്കുന്നു; രാജാവ് വിവാഹം ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ദയ മൻസൂറിനൊപ്പം ഒളിച്ചോടാൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു.
The king thinks Daya is a man; his daughter falls in love. When a royal wedding is planned, Daya meets Mansour and decides to flee with him.
രാജാവ് സത്യം കണ്ടെത്തി; ജനം ദയയുടെ ജ്ഞാനം ആവശ്യമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ക്ഷമിക്കാൻ അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു; ദയയും മൻസൂറും വിവാഹിതരാകുന്നു.
The king learns the truth; the people plead that Daya's wisdom is needed - she is forgiven, reappointed minister, and happily marries Mansour.
