പെരുമഴയത്ത് Perumazhayath - In the Heavy Rain

Three sides of Mookuthala are surrounded by backwaters once called 'kadavu.' Boats were the only way to cross.

Great houses had their own boats. Paddy was grown after draining the backwater - hard work pumping water with a wheel. Night songs of drawing water linger in memory.

Usually rain was beauty and excitement in Mookuthala life - part of childhood's sweet memories.

പതിമൂന്നാം വയസ്സിൽ കർക്കടകത്തിൽ ചുഴലിക്കാറ്റും പെരുമഴയും വലിയ ഭീഷണി തീർത്തു.

At thirteen, a Karkkadaka cyclone combined with torrential rain brought terrible danger.

The family spent a sleepless night in terror as trees fell near the house and damage spread.

നാല് ദിവസം തുടർച്ചയായി മഴ. ഇടി, മിന്നൽ, വൻകാറ്റ്. പുഴ കരകവിഞ്ഞു.

Rain continued four days with thunder, lightning and wind; the river overflowed and many houses went under water.

മൂന്നു ദിവസങ്ങൾക്കുശേഷം മഴ ശമിച്ചു. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ നാശവും സൗന്ദര്യവും ഒരുമിച്ച് ഓർമ്മയിൽ.

After three days the rain stopped. Beauty and terror of nature remain etched in childhood memory.
