സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന്റെ ചിറകുകൾ Swathanthryathinte Chirakukal - Wings of Freedom (Nalacharitham Attakkatha)

ഉണ്ണായി വാരിയർ രചിച്ച നളചരിതം ആട്ടക്കഥയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഖണ്ഡം. മഹാഭാരതത്തിലെ നള-ദമയന്തി കഥ കേരളത്തിന്റെ സംഗീത-നൃത്ത-നാടക പാരമ്പര്യത്തിൽ പുനരാവിഷ്കരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

An excerpt from Unnayi Warrier's Nalacharitham Attakkatha, performed as Kathakali. It retells the Mahabharata tale of Princess Damayanti of Vidarbha and righteous King Nala of Nishadha.

ദമയന്തി വിദർഭയിലെ രാജകുമാരി; സൗന്ദര്യത്തിനും വിനയത്തിനും പേരുകേട്ടവൾ. അവളുടെ സ്വയംവരത്തിന് രാജാക്കന്മാർ നിരവധി രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് എത്തുന്നു.

Damayanti, daughter of King Bhima, is famed for beauty and virtue. Gods and kings gather for her swayamvara, but her heart already holds Nala alone.

ദമയന്തിയുടെ തോട്ടത്തിലെ തടാകത്തിൽ സ്വർണ്ണനിറമുള്ള ഹംസം ഇറങ്ങുന്നു. പൂക്കളും തണലും നിറഞ്ഞ സ്ഥലം - കവിത്തരമായ ദൃശ്യം.

A golden swan alights on the pond in the flower garden. Its feathers glitter on the rippling water; Damayanti approaches it with affection.

ഹംസം ദമയന്തിയോട് സംസാരിക്കുന്നു. നളരാജാവിന്റെ ധർമ്മം, നീതി, വീരത, സൗന്ദര്യം - എല്ലാം മധുരമായി വർണ്ണിക്കുന്നു.

The golden swan speaks to Damayanti, praising Nala's dharma, justice, heroism and truthfulness - a lover who cares for his people. Love fills her heart.

ദമയന്തി സ്വയംവരത്തിൽ നളനെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നു. ദേവന്മാരുടെ വഞ്ചനയും കലി-പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളും പിന്നീട് വരും; എന്നാൽ പ്രണയം അതിജീവിക്കുന്നു.

At the swayamvara Damayanti garlands Nala. Though gods come in Nala's form, her heart recognizes him alone. Her choice is love joined with dharma.

നളൻ പ്രജകളോട് സ്നേഹമുള്ള, നീതി പാലിക്കുന്ന രാജാവ്. രാജ്യം സമൃദ്ധവും സമാധാനവും; അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നീതി ജനങ്ങളുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം.

Nala is a dharmic king - duty, truth, care for subjects. Under his rule people are content and free. The tale teaches that a kingdom cannot stand without justice.

ഹംസത്തിന്റെ ചിറകുകൾ പ്രണയസന്ദേശം കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു; നീതിമാന്റെ ധർമ്മം ജനത്തിന് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നൽകുന്നു. പ്രണയവും നീതിയും ഒരുമിച്ച് നിൽക്കുന്നു.

The title 'Wings of Freedom' - the swan's wings carry love and message; Nala's justice gives freedom to his people. Freedom is not only political but also inner dignity and dharma.

ഉണ്ണായി വാരിയർ-ന്റെ പാദങ്ങൾ സംഗീതത്തിനും നൃത്തത്തിനും അനുയോജ്യം. മണിപ്രവാളം, ശ്ലോകങ്ങൾ, സംഭാഷണം - കേരളത്തിന്റെ നാടകപാരമ്പര്യത്തിന്റെ ഉദാഹരണം.
