मातृभूमि का मान Matrubhumi ka Maan

मेवाड़ के राजा महाराणा लाखा चाहते हैं कि सभी पड़ोसी राजपूत राज्य मेवाड़ के नीचे रहना मान लें, ताकि सब मिलकर मज़बूत बनें। इसी इरादे से वे अपने सेनापति अभयसिंह को बूँदी भेजते हैं और कहते हैं कि बूँदी मेवाड़ के नीचे रहना मान ले।

Maharana Lakha, the ruler of Mewar, wants all the neighbouring Rajput states to accept Mewar's overlordship, so that together they become strong. With this intent he sends his commander Abhay Singh to Bundi, asking Bundi to accept Mewar's supremacy.

बूँदी के राजा राव हेमू इस बात को ठुकरा देते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि बूँदी महाराणाओं का आदर तो करता है, पर वह आज़ाद रहना चाहता है। प्यार और दोस्ती से वह साथ देगा, पर ताक़त के आगे झुककर किसी के नीचे रहना कभी नहीं मानेगा।

Rao Hemu, the ruler of Bundi, rejects this proposal. He says that Bundi respects the Maharanas but wishes to remain independent; he will stand with Mewar through love and friendship, but will never bow down and accept subjugation by force.

इस मना करने से महाराणा लाखा को बहुत गुस्सा आता है और वे पक्की कसम खाते हैं कि जब तक वे अपनी सेना के साथ बूँदी के किले में नहीं घुस जाते, तब तक न खाना खाएँगे न पानी पिएँगे। पर बूँदी को जीतना आसान नहीं और कसम निभाना मुश्किल हो जाता है।

Angered by this refusal, Maharana Lakha takes a hard vow that he will not eat or drink until he enters the fort of Bundi with his army. But conquering Bundi is not easy, and keeping the vow becomes very difficult.

तब चारणी (दरबार की एक समझदार औरत) महाराणा को एक तरकीब बताती है। बूँदी जैसा एक नकली किला बनवा लिया जाए और उसी पर हमला करके महाराणा अपनी कसम पूरी मान लें, ताकि असली लड़ाई और खून-खराबा टल जाए।

Then the Charni (a wise woman of the court) suggests a way out to the Maharana: let a fake fort, made to look like Bundi, be built; the Maharana can attack that and consider his vow fulfilled, so that a real war and bloodshed are avoided.

वीरसिंह, जो हाड़ा वंश का वीर है और असल में बूँदी का रहने वाला है, उस नकली किले की रक्षा के लिए लगाया जाता है। यह जानते हुए भी कि किला नकली है, वह हार मानने से इनकार कर देता है। उसका कहना है कि नकली बूँदी भी उसे अपनी जान से ज़्यादा प्यारी है, और अपनी जन्मभूमि के नाम की बेइज़्ज़ती वह नहीं सह सकता। वह सच्चे मन से लड़ता है और लड़ते हुए शहीद हो जाता है।

Veer Singh, a brave warrior of the Hada clan who originally belongs to Bundi, is appointed to defend the fake fort. Even though he knows the fort is artificial, he refuses to surrender. He says that even a fake Bundi is dearer to him than his own life, and that he cannot bear an insult to the name of his birthplace. He fights with a true heart and attains a martyr's death.

वीरसिंह की यह कुर्बानी महाराणा लाखा की आँखें खोल देती है। वे समझ जाते हैं कि किसी वीर जाति को ताक़त से दबाना ठीक नहीं, और सच्ची ताक़त एकता और दोस्ती में है, किसी को ज़बरदस्ती अपने नीचे रखने में नहीं। आख़िर में महाराणा लाखा और राव हेमू एक-दूसरे का आदर करते हुए मिल जाते हैं।

Veer Singh's sacrifice opens Maharana Lakha's eyes. He realises that it is wrong to crush a brave people by force, and that true strength lies in unity and friendship, not in forcing submission. In the end, mutual respect and reconciliation come about between Maharana Lakha and Rao Hemu.
