Summary

Gradient = rise / run. On a distance-time graph it is speed; on a velocity-time graph it is acceleration; on a cost graph it is price per unit.

A steep line is fast, a shallow line is slow, a flat line means stopped. A line falling back to zero means returning to the start.

Rising line = speeding up, flat line = constant speed, falling line = slowing down. Distance is the area, not the gradient.

Read across from one axis and up to the other. The gradient is the conversion rate, like km per mile.

Hard words & meanings

gradientthe rate of change shown by a line's steepness; rise divided by run
velocityspeed in a stated direction; can be positive or negative
accelerationthe rate of change of velocity; the gradient of a v-t graph
displacementdistance from the start in a given direction; the area under a v-t graph
originthe point (0, 0) where the two axes cross
conversion grapha straight-line graph used to change one unit into another
rate of changehow much one quantity changes for each unit change in another
trapeziuma four-sided shape with one pair of parallel sides; area = ½(a + b) × h
