Summary

Examples: 3x + 7 = 19, or 2(x − 1) = x + 4. Solving means finding the one value of x that makes both sides equal.

Add 5 to the left, add 5 to the right. Divide the left by 3, divide the right by 3. Do this until x stands alone.

Undo addition/subtraction first, then multiplication/division. Choose the side that keeps x positive to avoid sign slips.

In y = mx + c, m is the gradient (steepness) and c is where the line cuts the y-axis (the intercept).

Hard words & meanings

equationa statement that two expressions are equal, joined by an equals sign
variablea letter standing for an unknown number to be found
coefficientthe number multiplying the variable, e.g. 3 in 3x
linearhaving the variable only to the first power, giving a straight-line graph
transposeto move a term across the equals sign by applying the opposite operation
gradientthe steepness of a line, rise divided by run; the m in y = mx + c
interceptwhere a line crosses an axis; c is the y-intercept
solutionthe value of the variable that makes the equation true
