Summary
List each distinct value once and record how often it appears. The word frequency just means count.
Each group is a class; its size is the class width. Classes must not overlap and must cover every value.
Multiply each midpoint by its frequency, add these, then divide by total frequency. It is an estimate because exact values are unknown.
Each cumulative value counts everything at or below that class's upper boundary. The halfway point gives the estimated median.
Hard words & meanings
| frequency | the number of times a value or event occurs in a data set |
| class interval | a range of values grouped together in a frequency table |
| class width | the size of a class, found by subtracting lower bound from upper bound |
| modal class | the class interval with the highest frequency |
| midpoint | the value halfway between a class's lower and upper bounds |
| cumulative frequency | a running total of frequencies up to and including each class |
| median | the middle value when data is ordered; the halfway point of the cumulative frequency |
| interpolation | estimating a value inside a class using its position within the class width |
