Summary
Q1 is the median of the lower half, Q3 the median of the upper half. The median itself is Q2. Always sort the data first.
It ignores the extreme ends, so a single outlier does not distort it. A small IQR means consistent data.
It shows five numbers in one diagram. The box is the middle half; the whiskers show the full reach.
A box further right means higher values overall. A narrower box means more consistent data. Always comment on both.

| interquartile range | the difference Q3 − Q1, the spread of the middle 50% |
| median | the middle value of ordered data, also called Q2 |
| box plot | a diagram of a box and two whiskers showing the five-number summary |
| whisker | a line from the box out to the minimum or maximum value |
| cumulative frequency | a running total of frequencies up to each class |
| outlier | a value far from the rest, beyond Q1 − 1.5×IQR or Q3 + 1.5×IQR |
| skew | lack of symmetry shown by unequal whiskers or box halves |
