Summary
Add all the sides for perimeter (cm). Area fills the inside, so it is in square units (cm²).
Rectangle: l×w. Triangle: ½×b×h. Trapezium: ½(a+b)h. Use the straight-up height, not the slant.
Check if you are given radius or diameter - d = 2r. Mixing them up is the most common circle error.
An L-room is two rectangles; a track is a rectangle plus a circle. Sketch and label every length first.
Hard words & meanings
| perimeter | the total length of the boundary of a shape, found by adding all the sides |
| area | the amount of flat surface inside a shape, measured in square units |
| perpendicular height | the height measured at a right angle (90°) to the base, not along a slant |
| circumference | the perimeter of a circle - the distance around its curved edge |
| radius | the distance from the centre of a circle to its edge; half the diameter |
| sector | a slice of a circle bounded by two radii and the arc between them |
| arc | a portion of the circumference - part of the curved boundary of a circle |
| composite shape | a shape built by joining simpler shapes such as rectangles, triangles and circles |
