Back home, he leaves the packet overnight. Morning: first apple rotten, second half-rotten, third squashed, fourth with a black wormhole. None of the four edible. More grievous than the four annas lost is the moral decay it reveals.

The narrator reflects: the shopkeeper cheated deliberately, but giving the handkerchief invited the cheat. Dishonesty happens when opportunity is given; giving opportunity to cheat is itself complicity. Earlier traders had reputation and would return extra money honestly.
