Summary

Narrator receives an invitation to inaugurate an honest people's conference. He swears he did not go for honesty - he went to pocket the difference by travelling second class while claiming first class fare (saving 150 rupees).

Warmly welcomed at the station with ten garlands. Narrator thinks of selling them if a gardener were nearby. Stays in a big hotel room. Does not lock the room to spare his companions trouble. Gives an inauguration speech for an hour.

Narrator's new chappals are missing after the inauguration. An honest delegate in his very chappals advises him: 'Never take off chappals in one place - one here, one ten feet away, then they won't be stolen!' The narrator plays along.

A bed-sheet disappears the first night. By the second night all three sheets are gone. The narrator's sunglasses vanish. A sympathetic delegate comes to commiserate - wearing the narrator's sunglasses himself.

On the third night the blanket is missing. The hotel minister scolds workers; the narrator talks him out of calling the police. Next morning the room lock itself is stolen. Narrator calls a rickshaw saying: 'Everything has been stolen - even the lock. I am the last thing left. If I stay I'll be stolen too.'
