गिल्लू Gillu

एक सुबह दो कौए बरामदे में एक गमले के चारों ओर चोंचों से खेल रहे थे। पास जाकर देखा - गमले और दीवार की संधि में गिलहरी का एक छोटा-सा बच्चा पड़ा था। शायद घोंसले से गिर पड़ा था। काकद्वय की चोंचों के दो घाव बहुत थे - वह निश्चेष्ट-सा चिपका पड़ा था।

One morning while studying crow-mythology, the narrator found a baby squirrel in the gap between a flower pot and the wall, wounded by two crows. Everyone said it couldn't survive crow-bites - leave it as is.

परंतु मन नहीं माना। उसे हौले से उठाकर कमरे में लाई। रुई से रक्त पोंछकर घावों पर पेनिसिलिन का मरहम लगाया। कई घंटे के उपचार के बाद मुँह में एक बूँद पानी टपकाया। तीसरे दिन वह अच्छा हो गया। उँगली पकड़ी, नीले काँच के मोतियों जैसी आँखों से देखा। 3-4 माह में स्निग्ध रोयें, झब्बेदार पूँछ, चंचल-चमकीली आँखें। नाम रखा - गिल्लू। हल्की डिलया में रुई बिछाकर तार से खिड़की पर लटका दिया।

She rescued it, applied penicillin, dripped water after hours of treatment. On the third day it gripped her finger with tiny paws. Within 3-4 months it grew silky fur, a bushy tail and sparkling eyes. She named it Gillu and made it a tiny basket home hung from the window.

जब लेखिका लिखने बैठती, गिल्लू पैर तक आकर परदे पर चढ़ता-उतरता। कभी-कभी उसे लिफाफे में पकड़ा जाता - वह घंटों मेज पर खड़ा रहता। भूख पर चिक-चिक करके सूचना देता। काजू प्रिय खाद्य था; काजू न मिले तो खाना छोड़ देता। लेखिका के साथ थाली में बैठना सीखा - एक-एक चावल उठाकर खाता।

Whenever she sat to write, Gillu would run up the curtain to get attention. Sometimes she held him in an envelope - only paws and head showing. Chik-chik was his hunger signal. Cashew was his favourite; without it he'd refuse other food. Eventually she taught him to sit by her plate and eat one grain at a time.

पहला वसंत आया। बाहर गिलहरियाँ जाली के पास आकर चिक-चिक करने लगीं। गिल्लू को मुक्त करना आवश्यक लगा। जाली का कोना खोल दिया। दिन भर झुंड में रहता; ठीक 4 बजे वापस आता। गिल्लू को चौंकाना पसंद था - फूलों में, परदे में, सोनजुही में छिपता। उसी बीच मोटर-दुर्घटना; अस्पताल में दिन बिताए। लौटने पर झूले में काजू भरे मिले - गिल्लू की अनूठी प्रतीक्षा।

Spring came - other squirrels chattered at the window. She felt Gillu needed freedom and opened the cage. He'd spend all day in the trees and return at exactly 4pm. He loved to surprise her - hiding in flowers, curtain folds, sonajuhi leaves. When she was hospitalised after a road accident, Gillu didn't eat his cashews and stored them - his silent wait.

गिलहरियों की जीवनावधि दो वर्ष से अधिक नहीं होती। गर्मियों में गिल्लू सुराही पर लेट जाता। फिर वह दिन आया - दिन भर कुछ नहीं खाया, बाहर नहीं गया। पंजे ठंडे; हीटर जलाया। प्रभात की प्रथम किरण के साथ वह चिर निद्रा में सो गया। झूला उतारकर रखा, जाली बंद हुई। सोनजुही की लता के नीचे समाधि। उस लघु गात का वसंती दिन जुही के फूल के रूप में खिलने का विश्वास मुझे संतोष देता है।

Squirrels don't live more than two years - Gillu's time came. In illness he'd gently stroke her head. In summer he'd lie on her pitcher for coolness. One day he ate nothing and stayed in. By morning he was gone. His nest was taken down. He was buried under the sonajuhi creeper - the belief that he might bloom as a spring flower brought comfort.
