बसंत की सच्चाई Basant Ki Sacchai

बसंत: एक गरीब शरणार्थी लड़का (12 वर्ष); प्रताप: बसंत का छोटा भाई (10 वर्ष); पंडित राजकिशोर: एक नेता (मजदूरों के नेता, किशनगंज में रहते हैं); डॉक्टर; दो राह चलते व्यक्ति।

Characters: Basant (12, poor refugee, barefoot, torn clothes); Pratap (Basant's younger brother, 10); Pandit Rajkishor (a labour leader, lives in Kishangunj); Doctor Varma; Amarsingh (Rajkishor's servant).

(एक बड़े नगर के बाज़ार का दृश्य। आने-जाने, लेने-देने का शोर। एक लड़का, नंगे पैर, फटे कपड़े, हाथ में सामान संभाले भागता हुआ आता है।) बसंत: छलनी ले लो, बटन ले लो, दियासलाई ले लो। (कोई नहीं सुनता। इसी समय एक खद्दरधारी व्यक्ति वहाँ से जाते दिखाई देते हैं। वे मजदूर नेता पं. राजकिशोर हैं।) बसंत: साहब! बटन लीजिए, देसी बटन। साहब, दियासलाई लीजिए।

Scene 1 - Market: Basant (12, barefoot, torn clothes) hawks strainers, buttons, matchboxes. Nobody buys. He follows Rajkishor who refuses everything. Rajkishor offers 2 paise charity - Basant firmly refuses: 'Yeh toh bheekh hai. Main bheekh nahin lunga.' He insists on a purchase. Rajkishor has no change, only a note. Basant takes the note to get it changed, promising to return in a moment. 15-20 minutes pass; Rajkishor thinks he won't return.

(किशनगंज का बोर्ड। संध्या हो गई है। प्रताप - 10 वर्ष, नंगे पैर, फटे कपड़े - लोगों से राजकिशोर का घर पूछ रहा है। एक व्यक्ति बताता है - वह नीला परदा दिखता है न, वहीं रहते हैं।) प्रताप राजकिशोर को बुलाता है। राजकिशोर खिड़की से झाँककर बाहर आते हैं। प्रताप बताता है कि बसंत मोटर के नीचे आ गया।

Scene 2 - Kishangunj: Pratap (10, also barefoot) finds Rajkishor's blue-curtained house. He tells Rajkishor: Basant was run over by a motor while returning with the change. Both feet crushed, unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he sent back 14.5 annas. Parents were killed in riots; both live with Bhikhu Ahir. Rajkishor is moved, immediately offers to go with Pratap, and sends Amarsingh to fetch Doctor Varma.

(बसंत एक कच्चे घर के ओसारे में ज़मीन पर दरी पर लेटा है। रह-रहकर दर्द से कराह उठता है। प्रताप और राजकिशोर का प्रवेश।) डॉक्टर पैर देखते हैं - हड्डी टूट गई है, अस्पताल ले जाना होगा। बसंत कहता है - 'आप क्या कर रहे हैं? मैं गरीब हूँ...' राजकिशोर: 'यह गरीब है पर इसमें एक दुर्लभ गुण है, यह ईमानदार है।'

Scene 3 - Basant's home: Basant lies on a dari (rug) on the floor of a kachcha house. Doctor examines him - leg bone likely broken, needs X-ray and hospital. Rajkishor goes to call ambulance. Basant (eyes opening): 'Aap kya kar rahe hain? Main garib hoon...' Rajkishor: 'Yeh garib hai par isme ek durlabh gun hai - yeh imaandaar hai.' Doctor gives injection. Curtain falls. Message: Self-respect and honesty like Basant's, and human compassion like Rajkishor's, are both worth emulating.
