ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ Bhishma Pratigya

ಭರತವಂಶದ ಶಂತನು; ಗಂಗೆಯಿಂದ ದೇವವ್ರತ; ಎಂಟು ಸಹೋದರರು ಗಂಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿದರು; ಕೊನೆಯ ಮಗು ದೇವವ್ರತ - ಭೀಷ್ಮ.

Shantanu of Bharata clan had Devavrata by Ganga. She drowned seven sons; the eighth she spared - Devavrata, later Bhishma.

ಹಸ್ತಿನಾಪುರದ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮ, ಸತ್ಯವಂತ ರಾಜ; ಚಂದ್ರನಂತೆ ರೂಪ, ಸೂರ್ಯನಂತೆ ತೇಜ, ವಾಯುವಿನಂತೆ ವೇಗ; ಕೋಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಮ, ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭೂಮಿ.

Shantanu was righteous and truthful king of Hastinapura - beautiful as the moon, swift as wind, patient as earth.

ದೇವವ್ರತ ತಂದೆಯಂತೆ ರೂಪ, ವಿದ್ಯಾ, ಶಸ್ತ್ರ, ಬಲ, ಸತ್ವ - ಶಂತನು ಅವನನ್ನು ಯುವರಾಜನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿದ.

Devavrata matched his father in looks, learning, arms and strength. Shantanu made him crown prince.

ಯಮುನಾ ಬಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಸ್ತರ ಮಗಳ ಸತ್ಯವತಿ; «ನಾನು ದೋಣಿ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತೇನೆ - ತಂದೆ ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ಕೆಲಸ».

By the Yamuna Shantanu met Satyavati, fisher-king's daughter who ferried boats for dharma.

ದಾಶರಾಜ: «ಸತ್ಯವತಿಯ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವ ಮಗನು ಕಾಲಾನಂತರ ರಾಜನಾಗಬೇಕು» - ಶಂತನು ಚಿಂತೆ.

Dasharaja stipulated Satyavati's son must inherit the throne. Shantanu fell into worry.

«ನೀನು ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ; ಮರ್ತ್ಯರು; ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಗ ಮಗನಲ್ಲ; ನಿನಗೇನಾದರೂ ವಿಪತ್ತು - ಕುಲ ನಿಂತುಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ».

Shantanu told Devavrata: you are my only son; mortals die; one son is no son; if harm befalls you the clan ends - that is my worry.

ದಾಶರಾಜನ ಬಳಿ: «ಈಕೆಯ ಮಗ ರಾಜನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ - ಸತ್ಯ»; «ನಾನು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಯಾಗಿಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತೇನೆ; ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಉತ್ತಮ ಲೋಕ».

Devavrata vowed Satyavati's son would rule and he would remain celibate lifelong - even without children he would gain a noble world.

ಭಯಂಕರ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಕೇಳಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳು «ಭೀಷ್ಮ» ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟರು; ಆಕಾಶದಿಂದ ಪುಷ್ಪವರ್ಷೆ.

Hearing the terrible vow the gods named him Bhishma - one of the fearsome pledge. Flowers rained from heaven.

ಭೀಷ್ಮ «ಬಾ ತಾಯಿ! ರಥ ಹತ್ತು» - ಸತ್ಯವತಿಯನ್ನು ಹಸ್ತಿನಾಪುರಕ್ಕೆ; ಶಂತನುವಿಗೆ ವಿವರ.

Bhishma brought Satyavati to Hastinapura in the chariot saying "Come, mother!" and explained all to Shantanu.

ಶಂತನು: «ನೀನಾಗಿ ಸಾವನ್ನು ಅಪೇಕ್ಷಿಸುವವರೆಗೂ ನಿನಗೆ ಸಾವು ಬರದೆ ಇರಲಿ!» - ಇಚ್ಛಾಮೃತ್ಯು.

Shantanu blessed him: death at will - he would not die until he chose to.
