ಅರಳಿಕಟ್ಟೆ Aralikatte

ಲೇಖಕರ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಶೇಷಪ್ಪನವರು ಮನೆಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ವಯಸ್ಸು ೭೫–೮೦; ಕೃಶ ದೇಹ, ಕುಳಿಬಿದ್ದ ಕಣ್ಣು, ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಮಂದ್ಯ; ಕಿವಿ ಕೇಳಿಸದು; ಕೋಲು ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ನಡೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ.

In the author's childhood Sheshappa visited their home. About 75–80 years old, frail, nearly blind and deaf, he could not walk a step without a stick.

ಶೇಷಪ್ಪನವ ಉತ್ಕಟ ಆಸೆ: ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತ ಮರಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಕಟ್ಟೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವುದು. ಕಣ್ಣು ಮುಚ್ಚುವ ಮೊದಲು ಇದು ನೆರವೇರಬೇಕು.

Sheshappa had one fierce desire: to establish a sacred fig and build a platform (katte) for the tree before his eyes closed.

ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥ ಕಟ್ಟೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸ್ಥಳ: ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬಸವನಗುಡಿಯ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಗುಡಿಯ ಮುಂಭಾಗ.

He chose the spot in front of Mallikarjuna Swami temple at Basavanagudi, Bengaluru.

ಶೇಷಪ್ಪನವರು ಜೀವನೋಪಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಿತ್ಯ ಭಿಕ್ಷೆ ಬೇಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ನಾಲ್ಕು ಜನಕ್ಕೆ ಭೋಜನ, ಐದು ಮನೆಗಳ ಭಿಕ್ಷೆ, ಅಡುಗೆ - ಹೊರೆ ಭಾರ.

He lived by daily begging: feeding guests, collecting alms from five houses, cooking - a heavy double burden.

ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ ಮುಗಿಯಿತು. ತಾಮ್ರದ ಪಂಚಪಾತ್ರೆ, ಉದ್ದರಣೆ, ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣು, ಸೇವಂತಿಗೆ ಹೂ, ಅನಂತ ವಸ್ತ್ರ - ಯಜಮಾನರ ಸೋದರತ್ತೆಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು.

At last the work was done. He gave brass vessels, a ladle, plantain, flowers and cloth to the author's sister-in-law to pass to the patron, saying his debt was cleared.

ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಮಾರಂಭ, ಮದುವೆ ಮಂಟಪ, ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಆಟ, ಹಿರಿಯರ ಗಾಳಿಸೇವನೆ, ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ - ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥ ಕಟ್ಟೆ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಆಶ್ರಯ.

Village gatherings, weddings, children's play, elders' meetings and travellers' rest - the sacred fig platform served the public in many ways.

ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ «ಈ ಮುದುಕ ಜನರನ್ನು ತೊಂದರೆಗೆ ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದನು?» ಎಂದು ಅನಿಸಿತು. ನಂತರ ಶೇಷಪ್ಪನಂತ ಮಹಾನುಭಾವರಿಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು.

As a child the author wondered what trouble the old man caused. Later he understood Sheshappa's dedication raised sacred fig platforms for streets and villages, and felt gratitude.

ಸೋದರತ್ತೆ «ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಹಾಲು ಕುಡಿದು ಹೋಗಿ» ಎಂದರು. ಶೇಷಪ್ಪನ «ಇವತ್ತು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಜನಕ್ಕೆ ಭೋಜನ; ಐದು ಮನೆ ಭಿಕ್ಷೆ; ಅನ್ನಶಾಂತಿಗೆ ಬರುವವರನ್ನು ಕಾಯಿಸಬಾರದು» ಎಂದು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿ ಹೋದರು.

When asked to drink milk he refused: four guests to feed, five houses to beg from, he could not keep annadana waiting or stand idle at the door.

ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥ ಬರಿಯ ಮರವಲ್ಲ - ಮಾನವನ ಒಡನಾಳಿ; ಅನಾದಿಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಉಪಯೋಗಿ. ಶೇಷಪ್ಪನ ಯಶೋಗಾಥೆ ಕಡು ಬಡತನದಲ್ಲೂ ಹೃದಯ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತಿಕೆ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The peepal is not mere wood but humanity's ancient companion. Sheshappa's story shows a rich heart even in deep poverty.
