ಉರಿದ ಬದುಕು Urida Baduku

ತಿಪ್ಪಣ್ಣ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರ. ಕಾಶೀಮಲಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲಲು ಹೊರಟಿದ್ದ. ಅಪರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಂಗಿ ಅನ್ನವ್ವನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ಮೆಲ್ಲನೆ ಬಾಗಿಲು ಬಡಿಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಯಾರೋ ತನ್ನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂಬ ಭಯ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಇದೆ.

Burning with anger, Tippanna sets out to kill Kashimali. In the dead of night he winds through crooked lanes to his sister Annavva's house and softly knocks; he senses someone has followed him.

ಅನ್ನವ್ವ ಅರ್ಧ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಒಳಗೆ ಬರಬೇಡ ಅಣ್ಣಾ ಎಂದು ಗೋಗರೆಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ತನ್ನ ಗಂಡ ಈಗ ಹೆದರಿ ರಜಾಕಾರರ ಕಡೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದಾನೆ, ನೀನು ಬಂದದ್ದು ಗೊತ್ತಾದರೆ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

Standing at the half-open door, Annavva begs him not to enter, for the Razakars would push them all into the jaws of death. Out of fear for his life her husband has joined the Razakars, and if he learns her brother is here he would not hesitate to hand him over.

ಅನ್ನವ್ವ ತಾನು ಸಾಯಲು ಸಿದ್ಧ, ಆದರೆ ಅಣ್ಣ ಬದುಕಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಒಳಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ಯಾಳೆ ತುಂಬಿದ ಚೀಲ ತಂದು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ತಿಪ್ಪಣ್ಣ ಅದನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹಿಂದೆ ಸರಿಯುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಬಾಗಿಲು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತದೆ.

Having lost her father, Annavva cannot bear to lose her brother too; though ready to die herself she wants him to live. She fetches a bag of bread and pulse and gives it to him; Tippanna takes it and steps back, and the door closes.

ಗಾಢ ಕತ್ತಲಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಪ್ಪಣ್ಣ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯದೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಯಾರೋ ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದು ಅವನ ಎರಡೂ ಕೈ ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರು ಶಂಕ್ರಣ್ಣ. ತಿಪ್ಪಣ್ಣನನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಮನೆಯ ಒಳಗೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

In pitch darkness, in a town full of police and Razakars, Tippanna walks without knowing where to go. From behind, someone suddenly grips both his hands hard; it is Shankranna. He leads him through a narrow lane to a house's back door and they go inside.

ಒಳಗೆ ಚಿಮಣಿ ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕು. ಶಂಕ್ರಣ್ಣ ತಿಪ್ಪಣ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಭೀಮ್ ರೆಡ್ಡಿಯನ್ನು ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮೂವರೂ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಶಿಬಿರಗಳ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರರು. ಪೊಲೀಸರೂ ರಜಾಕಾರರೂ ಇವರ ಹೆಸರು ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ಹೆದರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

By the dim chimney lamp Shankranna introduces Tippanna and the thick-moustached Bheem Reddy to each other. Stationed in separate camps on the Tungabhadra bank, these daring men would cross the river to attack, and even the police and Razakars feared their names.

ಶಂಕ್ರಣ್ಣ ತನ್ನ ಕತೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಜಾಕಾರರು ಅವನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಹಚ್ಚಿ, ಅವನನ್ನು ಒದ್ದು ಬೇವಿನ ಮರದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬಿಸಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಎಚ್ಚರ ತಪ್ಪಿದ ಅವನನ್ನು ಮಾದರ ದುರ್ಗಪ್ಪ ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದು ತನ್ನ ಕೋಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಲಗಿಸಿ ನೀರು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಬದುಕಿಸಿದ್ದ.

Shankranna, who had risen against the Nizam alongside Bettur Gowda, recounts how the Razakars set fire to his house, kicked him with their boots, and flung him under a neem tree. Crying for water until he fainted, he was carried away by Durgappa of the Madara community, who laid him in his room, gave him water and saved his life.

ದುರ್ಗಪ್ಪ ಶಂಕ್ರಣ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಕುಲ ಮರೆತು ತಿನ್ನು ಎಂದ. ಗಾಳಿ, ನೀರು, ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಕುಲ ಇಲ್ಲ; ಜೀವಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವ ಕುಲವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದ. ಬಸವಣ್ಣನ ವಚನ ಹೇಳಿದ. ದೇಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸಾಯುವುದು ಪುಣ್ಯದ ಕೆಲಸ ಎಂಬ ಅವನ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರರ ಕೈಕಾಲನ್ನು ಉಕ್ಕಿನಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು.

Setting out bread, chilli powder, oil and onion, Durgappa says saving life comes first; just as air, water and earth have no caste, life too has no caste, it is only something we ourselves made up, and he recites a vachana of Basavanna. To die for the country, casting aside attachment to life, is a holy act; victory is ours, and at least those who come after will see freedom. Such words, like devotional tatva-pada, made the fighters' limbs strong as steel.
