ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡು-ನುಡಿ Kannada Nadu-Nudi

ಪದದ ಅರ್ಥ ತಿಳಿದು ಮಾತನಾಡುವುದು, ಬೇರೆಯವರು ಆಡಿದ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದು ಪಾಲಿಸುವುದು, ಇದು ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡಿನ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವರು ಓದು-ಬರಹ ಕಲಿಯದಿದ್ದರೂ ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಜಾಣರು; ಕಾವ್ಯ ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ, ಕಾವ್ಯ ಬಳಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಣತರಾದ ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತರು.

The people of this land know how to speak with full understanding of words and to grasp and honour what others say. Srivijaya says that even without formal schooling Kannadigas are truly clever, gifted minds skilled in the practice of poetry.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲೇ ಹೇಳು; ಕನ್ನಡ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ ಶುದ್ಧ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೇ ಹೇಳು. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ತಂದು ಬೆರೆಸುವುದು ಸರಿಯೇ? ತುಪ್ಪ ಮತ್ತು ಎಣ್ಣೆಯನ್ನು ಬೆರೆಸುವಂತೆ ಎರಡನ್ನು ಬೆರೆಸುವುದು ಸರಿಯಲ್ಲ.

If you mean to write in Sanskrit, write wholly in Sanskrit; if in Kannada, write in pure Kannada. Is it fitting to drag Sanskrit into clean Kannada? Mixing the two is as unsuitable as blending ghee with oil, says Nayasena.

ಸಮುದ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಕಪಿಸೈನ್ಯ ಸೇತುವೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲಿ, ಕಟ್ಟದಿರಲಿ; ವಾಮನನು ಆಕಾಶವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟಲಿ, ಮುಟ್ಟದಿರಲಿ; ನರನು (ಅರ್ಜುನ) ಶಿವನ ಗಂಟಲನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿ ಮೆಟ್ಟಲಿ, ಮೆಟ್ಟದಿರಲಿ. ಆದರೆ ಕವಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ, ಮುಟ್ಟಿ, ಒತ್ತಿ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಆ ಕವೀಂದ್ರರ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವೋ! ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಬೆರಗಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Let the monkey host bridge the ocean or not, let Vamana's stride touch the sky or not, let Nara press down Hara's throat or not, these are mere feats of strength. But when poets bind, touch and tread upon words within a poem, how surpassing is the power of those great poets, marvels Nemichandra.

ಸುಲಿದ ಬಾಳೆಹಣ್ಣಿನ ಹಾಗೆ, ಸಿಪ್ಪೆ ತೆಗೆದ ಕಬ್ಬಿನ ಹಾಗೆ, ಬಿಸಿ ಆರಿದ ಹಾಲಿನ ಹಾಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ನುಡಿ ಸುಲಭ ಮತ್ತು ಸಿಹಿ. ಇಂಥ ಸುಂದರ, ಸರಳ ಕನ್ನಡ ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲೇ ತಿಳಿದು, ತನ್ನೊಳಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಮೋಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರೆ ಸಾಲದೇ? ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಬೇಕೆ ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Like a peeled banana, like sugarcane stripped of its rind, like milk whose heat has cooled, Kannada speech is easy and sweet. Is it not enough, asks Mahalingaranga, to understand and win one's own liberation within this gentle, simple Kannada? What more would Sanskrit give?

ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ, ಸಂಪಿಗೆ, ದಾಳಿಂಬೆ, ಚೆಂದದ ತೆಂಗು, ಮಾವು, ಅಡಿಕೆ ಮರ; ಇಂಥ ಗಿಡಮರಗಳಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವ ಜಾಗವೇ ಈ ನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಡೆ ಹೂವು, ಹಣ್ಣು, ಮರಗಳಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಬಣ್ಣಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

There is no spot in this land that lacks jasmine, champak, pomegranate, graceful coconut, mango or areca trees. By saying so, Andayya praises the rich natural beauty of the Kannada land, where flowers, fruit and trees fill every corner.
