ಚಕ್ರಗ್ರಹಣ Chakragrahana

ಮೂರನೆಯ ದಿನ ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗಾಪುತ್ರ ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಎದುರಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಶೂರನಾದ ಅರ್ಜುನನು ಬಾಣ ಹಿಡಿದು ಭೀಷ್ಮನ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾನೆ.

On the third day of the war the Ganga-born Bhishma comes face to face, and the valiant Arjuna takes up his bow and stands before him.

'ಹಿರಿಯರೇ, ಈ ದಿನ ನಿಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಗ್ರಾಮ ಒದಗಿತು. ಬಾಣದಿಂದಲೇ ನಿಮಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ವೀರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ' ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಜುನ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಗಾಂಡೀವದಿಂದ ಎರಡು ಬಾಣ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಭೀಷ್ಮನ ಪಾದಗಳಿಗೆ ವಂದನೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Arjuna says, 'Elder, today I have the chance to fight with my own elders; with my arrows I salute you and test your prowess.' Fixing two arrows on the Gandiva bow as a salute to his elder's feet, he releases them and they fall reverently near Bhishma's feet.

ಗಂಗಾಪುತ್ರ ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಇದನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಸಂತೋಷಪಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅರ್ಜುನ ಬಾಣ ಬಿಡಲು, ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ತಂಡತಂಡದ ಬಾಣಗಳಿಂದ ಅವನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತ ನಗುತ್ತ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Seeing this, the Ganga-born Bhishma rejoices; as Arjuna shoots his arrows, Bhishma cuts them down with volleys of his own arrows and speaks, smiling.

'ತಂದೆ ತೀರಿದ ದಿನದಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದ ನೀನು, ಇಂದು ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನ ಸಹಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಂತಿರುವೆ. ನನ್ನಂಥ ಹಸುಳೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋರಾಡುವುದು ವಿವೇಕವೇ? ಎರಡೂ ಪಕ್ಷ ನಿಮಗೆ ಒಂದೇ ತಾನೆ?' ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಜುನ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಭೀಷ್ಮನು 'ಬಾಲಭಾಷೆ ಆಡಬೇಡ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ದಯೆಯೋ ದುಃಖವೋ' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Arjuna asks, 'From the day my father died you protected us; today you roar in aid of the Kaurava king. Is it wisdom to fight with a child like me? Are both sides the same to you?' Bhishma replies, 'Do not speak childish words; whether it is great love or grief I feel for you, who can say.'

'ಕಮಲನಾಭ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಬಲ್ಲ; ಶಿವ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಬಾಣವನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು ನನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿಡು' ಎಂದು ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅರ್ಜುನ ಆಕಾಶವನ್ನೇ ಮುಚ್ಚುವಷ್ಟು ಬಾಣ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಯುದ್ಧ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಭೀಷ್ಮನ ಬಾಣಗಳಿಂದ ರಥದ ಕುದುರೆಗಳು ನೊಂದು, ಸಾರಥಿ ಮೂರ್ಛೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ; ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಬೆರಗಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Bhishma says, 'Krishna knows it; take the arrow given by the three-eyed Shiva and loose it on me.' Arrows fly thick enough to veil the sky; Arjuna cuts them and showers his own. When the chariot horses cry out and the charioteer faints in pain, Bhishma is astonished.

'ಭಲೇ ಅರ್ಜುನ' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತ ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಎಲ್ಲ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಿಂದ ಹೋರಾಡಿದರೂ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ಸೋಲಾಗದು. ಕೃಷ್ಣ ರಥ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರಲು ಭೀಷ್ಮನು 'ಹರಿಯನ್ನೇ ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತೇನೆ' ಎಂದು ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡು, ಪರಶುರಾಮ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಬಾಣ ತೆಗೆದು ಬಿಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆ ಬೆಂಕಿಯುಗುಳುವ ಬಾಣ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಹಣೆಗೆ ನಾಟುತ್ತದೆ.

Crying 'Well done, Arjuna,' Bhishma fights with every weapon, yet no defeat comes to Arjuna. As Krishna drives the chariot, Bhishma, worn out, grows angry vowing 'I will defeat Hari himself,' and looses the arrow given by Parashurama; the fire-spitting arrow strikes Krishna on the forehead.

ಹಣೆ ಒಡೆದು ರಕ್ತ ಸುರಿಯಿತು; ಎರಡು ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಿಡಿ ಹೊಮ್ಮಿತು. ತುಟಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡು ಮಹಾಕೋಪದಿಂದ 'ಭೀಷ್ಮನನ್ನೂ ಕೌರವಸೇನೆಯನ್ನೂ ಪುಡಿಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ' ಎಂದು ಗರ್ಜಿಸಿ, ಕಡಿವಾಣ ಬಿಸುಟು ಚಕ್ರವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ನುಗ್ಗಲು, ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು ಲೋಕಗಳೂ ತಲ್ಲಣಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.

His forehead split and blood gushed; sparks blazed from both eyes. Biting his lip in great fury, roaring 'I will grind the Kaurava host and crush Bhishma,' he flings away the reins, seizes the discus and leaps forward, and all the fourteen worlds tremble.

'ಹರಿಯ ಕೋಪವನ್ನು ತಡೆಯುವವರು ಯಾರು?' ಎಂದು ಎರಡೂ ಸೇನೆಗಳು ಬೆರಗಾಗಿ ಕಣ್ಣು ಮುಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಹೆದರದೆ ರಥದಿಂದ ಇಳಿದು ನಡೆದು ಬಂದು, 'ಮುಕುಂದ, ಮುರಾರಿ, ಜಯ' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಮೃದುಕೈ ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Both armies, struck with wonder, shut their eyes asking 'Who can stop Hari's wrath?' Bhishma, unafraid, steps down from his chariot, walks forward, and hailing 'Mukunda, Murari, victory,' takes hold of Achyuta's gentle hand.

'ಶ್ರೀಮನೋಹರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ನನ್ನ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಲಾಲಿಸು. ನನ್ನ ಕಂಠ ಕೊಯ್ಯಲು ನಿನ್ನ ಚಿನ್ಮಯ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಕ್ರ ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವೆಯಾ? ಚೆನ್ನಾಯಿತು, ಸೇವಕನಿಗೆ ಜಯ ನೀಡಿ ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ದೇವ, ಮಹಾನುಭಾವ' ಎಂದು ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಸ್ತುತಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Bhishma praises him: 'Beloved Lord, listen with love to my words. To cut my throat you hold the discus in your divine hand? Good indeed, O God who grants victory to your servant and protects the world, O great being.'

'ಇಂದಿರೇಶನೆ, ಇವರ ಜಗಳ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಕಣ್ಣಾರೆ ತಿಳಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇಹ ಬಾಡಿಗೆಯ ವಸ್ತು; ಇಂದೇ ಹೋಗಲಿ, ಚಕ್ರವನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿಡು, ನಿನ್ನ ಮಾತು ತೀರಲಿ' ಎಂದು ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಬೇಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Bhishma pleads, 'Lord of Lakshmi, I see clearly I cannot stop this quarrel by standing here. This body is but a borrowed thing; let it perish this very day, loose the discus on me and fulfil your word.'

ಕೃಷ್ಣನು 'ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ನನಗೆ ನಗು ಬಂತು. ಹುಲ್ಲು ಮುರಿಯಲು ಕೊಡಲಿ ಬೇಕೇ? ಚಕ್ರ ಕಳುಹಿಸುವುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಯಿತು. ನನ್ನ ಒಂದು ರೋಮ ಕಡಿದರೂ ನಾನು ನಿನಗೆ ಶರಣು' ಎಂದು ಭೀಷ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Krishna says, 'Looking at you I had to smile. Does one need an axe to break a blade of grass? To send the discus would be too much; if you can cut even a single hair of mine, I shall surrender to you.'

ಕೃಷ್ಣನು ಕಿರುನಗೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಚಕ್ರವನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಿ, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ರಥವನ್ನು ಏರಿ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ಅಭಯ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಹಣೆಯ ರಕ್ತವನ್ನು ಒರೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಒಂಬತ್ತನೆಯ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಭೀಷ್ಮನ ರಭಸಕ್ಕೆ ಧರ್ಮಜ ಚಿಂತಿಸಿದನು.

With a faint smile Krishna sheathes the discus, mounts the noble chariot and grants safety to Arjuna; Bhishma wipes the blood from Achyuta's forehead. Thus the ninth day passed in battle, and that night Yudhishthira grew anxious at Bhishma's fierce assault.
