ಬಲಿಯನಿತ್ತೊಡೆ ಮುನಿವೆಂ Baliyanittode Munivem

ಬಾಲಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ: ಮಾರಿದತ್ತ ಮಹಾರಾಜನೇ, ನಾನು ಅಭಯರುಚಿ ಕುಮಾರ; ಈ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಹೆಣ್ಣುಮಗಳು ಅಭಯಮತಿ, ನನ್ನ ಅಕ್ಕ. ನಾವಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಬಗೆಬಗೆಯ ಕರ್ಮಗಳಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ನೀನು ಏನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತೀಯೋ ಅದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.

The boy speaks: O King Maridatta, I am the prince Abhayaruchi, and this renowned girl Abhayamati is my elder sister; by various deeds (karma) we two have come here, and I shall tell you whatever you ask.

ಗುರುಗಳು ಆಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡಲು ನಾವು ಭಿಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆವು; ಆಗ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ತರಲಾಯಿತು. ಆ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೂ ಭಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ನಿನ್ನ ಕೇಡನ್ನು (ನಿನಗೆ ಒದಗುವ ಕೆಡುಕನ್ನು) ಆಲೋಚಿಸಿ, ಕರುಣೆಯಿಂದ ನಾನು ತಳಮಳಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

When our teacher bade us, we were coming out for alms; then we were seized and brought here. We have no fear at all about that; but, foreseeing the harm that will befall you, I am troubled out of compassion.

ಸಂಕಲ್ಪಹಿಂಸೆ (ಹಿಂಸೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಯಸುವುದು) ಒಂದರಲ್ಲೇ ನಾನು ಜನ್ಮಜನ್ಮಗಳ ದುಃಖವನ್ನು ಕಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ಉಂಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಆದರೆ ನೀನು ಭಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಜೀವಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತಿರುವೆ; ಇದರಿಂದ ನರಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿನಗೆ ಪರಿಹಾರವೆಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ?

From sankalpa-himse (the mere resolve to do violence) alone, I have seen and tasted the sorrow of many births. You, without any fear, are killing so many living beings; how then will you find release from hell?

ಬಾಲಕನ ಈ ನುಡಿ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿದ್ದ ಜೀವಿಗಳ ಸಮೂಹಕ್ಕೆ 'ಅಭಯ' (ಬದುಕಿನ ಭರವಸೆ) ಎಂಬ ಡಂಗುರ ಸಾರಿದಂತೆ ಒಪ್ಪವಾಗಿ (ಶೋಭಿಸುತ್ತಾ) ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು. ಆ ಮಾತು ಕೇಳಿದ ಮಾರಿದತ್ತ ರಾಜ ಬಿಲ್ಲೂ ಬೆರಗೂ ಆಗಿ (ದಿಗ್ಮೂಢನಾಗಿ) ಉದ್ವೇಗಗೊಂಡನು.

These words, to the throng of gathered creatures, shone like a proclamation (dangura) of 'abhaya' (safety, no-fear); hearing them, King Maridatta became dumbfounded and seized with agitation.

ಆಗ ಚಂಡಮಾರಿ ದೇವಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಾಣುವ ರೂಪ ತಾಳಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷಳಾದಳು. ಆಕೆ ಆ ಕುಮಾರನಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ, 'ನೀನೇ ನನ್ನ ಆಚಾರ್ಯ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿದ್ದ ಜಾತ್ರೆಯ ಜನರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಕೇಳುವಂತೆ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದಳು.

Then the goddess Chandamari, taking a body visible to the eye, bowed to the prince and, declaring 'you are my teacher (acharya)', made it heard so that the whole gathered fair (jatre) listened well.

ಚಂಡಮಾರಿ ಹೇಳಿದಳು: ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳೆಲ್ಲರೂ ನೀರು, ಗಂಧ, ಹೂಮಾಲೆ, ಅಕ್ಕಿ, ಧೂಪ, ದೀಪ, ಹವಿಸ್ಸು, ತಾಂಬೂಲ ಮುಂತಾದವುಗಳಿಂದ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಿ. ಆದರೆ ಜೀವಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಾನು ಸಿಟ್ಟುಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ (ಬಲಿ ನನಗೆ ಬೇಡ).

Let all the people worship me with water, sandal-paste, garlands, rice, incense, lamps, oblation and betel; but if you offer me a sacrifice of living creatures, I shall be angered. (This is the line that gives the poem its title.)

ಹೀಗೆ ಹೇಳಿ ದೇವಿ ಮಾಯವಾದಳು. ಆಗ ಮಾರಿದತ್ತ ರಾಜ, ಬಲಿಗಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದು ತಂದಿಟ್ಟ ಜೀವಿಗಳ ರಾಶಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಿ, ಜನರಿಗೆ ಆನಂದ ಕೊಡುವ ತನ್ನ ತಂಗಿಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳಾದ (ಅಭಯರುಚಿ-ಅಭಯಮತಿಯರನ್ನು) ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಮುದ್ದಿಸಿದನು.

When she had thus vanished, King Maridatta set free the heap of creatures brought for sacrifice, and lovingly caressed these children of his sister, who gave joy to the people.

ಗಳಗಳನೆ ಸುರಿಯುವ ಕಣ್ಣೀರಿನೊಡನೆ, ಆ ಅಶುಭಕ್ಕೆ (ತಾನು ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೇಡಿಗೆ) ಮಂಗಲಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದಂತೆ, ರಾಜ ಆ ಸೋದರ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಎದೆಗಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಿಸಿಯಾಗಿ ನಿಟ್ಟುಸಿರು ಬಿಟ್ಟನು (ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತಾಪಪಟ್ಟನು).

With tears streaming down, as if giving an auspicious bath to the evil he had done, the king embraced the brother-and-sister children to his breast and heaved a warm sigh of remorse.

ತಾನು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಪಾಪಕೃತ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ನಾಚಿಕೊಂಡ ಆ ರಾಜ, ಕುಸುಮದತ್ತನಿಗೆ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಒಡೆತನವನ್ನು (ರಾಜಪದವಿಯನ್ನು) ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಬಳಿಕ ತಾನು ದೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಂಡನು.

Ashamed of the sinful deeds he had done till then, the king gave the lordship of the earth (the throne) to Kusumadatta, and thereafter took up ascetic initiation (diksha).

ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ಉಗ್ರ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ, ಸಮಾಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಮುಗಿಸಿ, ಮೂರನೆಯ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ತನ್ನ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗುವಂತೆ, ಮಾರಿದತ್ತ ಕಲಿಪುರುಷನನ್ನೇ ಹಂಗಿಸಿ ಸೋಲಿಸಿದಂತೆ ದೇವನೇ ಆದನು.

Performing severe penance for some time and ending his body in deep meditation (samadhi), with the third heaven as his abode, Maridatta became a god, as if mocking Kali (the spirit of the dark age) into defeat.
