ವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಗೀತೆ Vyaghragite

ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ ಹುಲಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೌರವ. ಹುಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ತಿನ್ನುವುದು ನಿಜ, ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಆಹಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಶಾಖಾಹಾರ ತಿಂದು ಬದುಕಬಲ್ಲ ಮನುಷ್ಯನೇ ಮಾಂಸ ತಿನ್ನುವಾಗ, ಹುಲಿ ತಿನ್ನುವುದು ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ: ಹುಲಿ ಧರ್ಮ ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆಯೇ?

The writer respects the tiger: killing for food is no sin, especially when even humans who could survive on a vegetarian diet eat meat. The real question is whether the tiger kills by some code of dharma.

ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿಯ ವಂಶದ ಶಾನುಭೋಗರೊಬ್ಬರು ತುಮಕೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯವರು. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕನಾಯಕನಹಳ್ಳಿಗೆ ಇರಸಾಲಿಗಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಿ, ಖಜಾನೆಗೆ ಹಣ ಕಟ್ಟಿ ವಾಪಸ್ಸಾಗುವಾಗ ಸಂಜೆಯಾಯಿತು. ಊರಿಗೆ ಮದಲಿಂಗನ ಕಣಿವೆಯ ಕಾಡುದಾರಿ ದಾಟಬೇಕಿತ್ತು. ಬೆಳುದಿಂಗಳಾದರೂ ಕಣಿವೆ ತಲುಪುವಾಗ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾಯಿತು; ಹಸಿವು, ಭಯ ಎರಡೂ ಸೇರಿದವು.

A devoted Shanubhoga (village accountant) from a once-ministerial family, returning from depositing tax revenue at Chikkanayakanahalli, must cross the forest path of Madalinga's valley. Moonlight notwithstanding, night falls and hunger and fear quicken his step.

ಹತ್ತಿರದ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಸಿದ ಹುಲಿಯೊಂದು ಎದ್ದು ಹೊರಬಂದಿತು. ಶಾನುಭೋಗರ ದುಂಡಾದ ದೇಹ ಕಂಡು ಪರಮಾನಂದವಾಯಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಭರತಖಂಡದ ಹುಲಿಗಳು ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದ ಹಾರಿ ಕೊಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ; ಬೆನ್ನು ತಿರುಗಿಸಿರುವವರನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲುವುದು ಧರ್ಮವಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಮುಂಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ನೆಗೆದು ಬೀಳಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸಿತು.

A hungry tiger emerges and delights at the plump accountant, but Indian tigers never strike from behind, for killing one whose back is turned is not dharma. So it must leap to face him head-on.

ಶಾನುಭೋಗರಿಗೆ ಆರನೆಯ ಇಂದ್ರಿಯ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಿತು. ಹುಲಿ ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೆ ನೆಗೆದಾಗ ಅವರು ಬಾಗಿ, ಮತ್ತೆ ಹಿಂದಕ್ಕೆ ತಿರುಗಿ ಬೆನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿದರು. ಐದಾರು ಸಲ ಹೀಗೆ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ನಿಂತಲ್ಲೇ ಕುಲಾಲಚಕ್ರದಂತೆ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತಾ ಹುಲಿಗೆ ಮುಖ ತೋರಿಸದೆ ಇದ್ದರು. ಹುಲಿಯೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ವಂಶದ್ದಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಪುಣ್ಯಕೋಟಿಯ ಕಥೆ ನೆನೆದು ಅಧರ್ಮ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ.

His sixth sense alerts him; each time the tiger leaps to face him, he ducks and turns his back again, spinning like a potter's wheel. The well-bred tiger, recalling the cow Punyakoti's tale, refuses to act against dharma.

ಸುತ್ತುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಶಾನುಭೋಗರ ತಲೆ ಸುತ್ತಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿತು. ಆಯುಧವಿಲ್ಲ; ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಖರ್ದಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೇ ಅವರ 'ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಸ್ತ'. ಅದನ್ನು ಹುಲಿಯ ಮುಖಕ್ಕೆ ಎಸೆದರು; ಪೆಟ್ಟಾಗದಿದ್ದರೂ ಹುಲಿ ಕ್ಷಣ ಗಲಿಬಿಲಿಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಆ ಅರೆ ನಿಮಿಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಮರದ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಓಡಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಕಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಎಡವಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆ ತಪ್ಪಿತು.

Dizzy and weaponless, he hurls his only weapon, the khirdi (revenue ledger) as a 'brahmastra' at the tiger's face. It does no harm but startles the beast; in that half-minute he dashes for a tree, trips on a stone, falls, and faints.

ಆ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ತೆಂಗಿನಕಾಯಿ ಗಾಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಐದು ಜನ ರೈತರ ಎತ್ತುಗಳು ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋಗದೆ ನಿಂತವು. ಹುಲಿಯ ಗರ್ಜನೆ ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು. ಎತ್ತುಗಳ ಗಂಟೆ, ರೈತರ ಮಾತು, ಕೋವಿಯ ಶಬ್ದ ಕೇಳಿ ಹುಲಿ ಗರ್ಜಿಸಿ ಓಡಿಹೋಯಿತು. ರೈತರು ಪಂಜು ಹೊತ್ತಿಸಿ ಬಂದು, ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದ ಶಾನುಭೋಗರ ಮುಖಕ್ಕೆ ನೀರು ಚಿಮುಕಿಸಿ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಿದರು.

Just then five farmers returning by bullock cart with coconuts: their oxen halt in fear, bells ring, and on hearing the men the tiger roars in frustration and flees. Firing a gun and lighting a torch, the farmers revive the fallen accountant with water.

ಎಚ್ಚೆತ್ತ ಶಾನುಭೋಗರಿಗೆ ವಿಸ್ಮಯ: ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಬಿದ್ದಾಗ ಹುಲಿ ಏಕೆ ಎಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಲಿಲ್ಲ? 'ನಾನು ಮುಖ ಮೇಲಾಗಿ ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದೆನೆ?' ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದರು. ಬೆನ್ನು ಮೇಲಾಗಿ ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದರು! ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಹುಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಕುಲಧರ್ಮ ಪಾಲಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಮನೆ ಸೇರಿ 'ಹುಲಿ ಈಗ ಎಷ್ಟು ಹಸಿದಿರಬೇಕು' ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ನಕ್ಕರು. ಲೇಖಕರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಅವರನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿದ್ದು ಖರ್ದಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕವಲ್ಲ, ಹುಲಿಯ ಧರ್ಮಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ.

On waking he learns he fell on his back, which is why the tiger never touched him: it kept its code to the end. Home safe, he smiles wondering how hungry the tiger now is. The writer concludes it was the tiger's faith in dharma, not the ledger, that saved him.
